Reminder - Bingo Helpers Needed

Last year, St Mary's Bingo contributed more than $20,000 to the school which has benefited us in many ways including purchasing land (Hall St properties) and resources for the school.  The most recent donation was put towards the installation of new playground equipment. Unfortunately the volunteer roster is very low at the moment and they require help.  If you can spare some time on a few Saturday nights a year, please consider assisting.

If you are interested please contact Maree Williams 0438 084 364 or by email mwills@smmooroopna.catholic.edu.au

New - Communication Teams Reconciliation Week Write Up

St Mary’s School started the week with a flag-raising ceremony in the courtyard. The flag was raised at half mast and fire carriers shared information about the Stolen Generation. Following the ceremony, Aboriginal students and fire carriers travelled to Shepparton to attend the Sorry Day ceremony. At the Sorry Day ceremony, students presented hands that they made and put them at the bottom of the flags. The Sorry Day Ceremony had students from schools all over Shepparton. We felt sad and sorry for the Aboriginal kids who were taken from their families.

At the assembly, Billy and Zar played the didgeridoo and Billy also told us some information about how they are made. After they find a good branch, they put it on top of a termite mound and let the ants eat out the middle part. He also showed us some indigenous dance moves that were pretty cool.  Billy told us the indigenous name for the didgeridoo which is yidaki. He impressed us with his dance moves while Zar impressed us with his yidaki playing.

As part of reconciliation week, students made posters about the new theme ‘NOW MORE THAN EVER’. These posters were displayed in the courtyard and students reflectively walked around looking at posters while Zar and Merv played the yidaki. Our thoughts on the posters were that they were excellent because there were lots of interesting designs.

New - 1/2 Area Historical Walk of Mooroopna

Last week, 1/2s went for a long walk around some of the streets of Mooroopna to look at some of the historical buildings.

We found the site of William Archer’s first house which was also the first post office! We found what we think was his second house. We saw the deep water hole on the Goulburn river where the punt used to be. We also saw the old hospital and the site in Mill St where St Mary’s church used to be. We saw old photos in the walkway next to the post office and noticed lots of old buildings in McLennan St! We all thought it was interesting but now our legs are tired!

New - Prep Indigenous Learning

Prep's recent learning inquiry was all about traditional aboriginal foods, symbols. The students made damper and discussed traditional ways it was cooked. They explored animal movement through dance and made their own badges using symbols that we felt connected too. For some it was camp fires, or meeting places for others it was the animals they enjoyed exploring their movements through dance.

New - 3/4's Inquiry Learning

Over the past few weeks, the Grade 3/4s have been learning about what life would have been like for those who were convicts. We have learned about how they were treated, the clothing they wore, what they were fed on board the ships as well as the types of work they completed. We then composed our own letters from the perspective of a convict detailing what life may have been like during this time!

New - 5/6's Practise  Leadership & Teamwork

The Grade 5’s have been focusing on their leadership and teamwork skills over the last few weeks through some team building activities!

First they were set the challenge to create a spaghetti tower that would hold a marshmallow; and then they were set the pipeline challenge! They had to work together to get a ping pong ball from one spot to another using only paper and tape, and the ball had to be rolling the whole time!
