Year 8 Engineering Club
This year a group of enthusiastic Year 8 students have been attending the Year 8 Engineering Club on Tuesdays at lunchtime. The purpose of the club is to give Year 8 students the opportunity to practically apply some basic engineering techniques to construct models that rely on the fundamental principles of Physics.
Their first task was to build and test bridges constructed from paddle pop sticks and glue with an emphasis on using triangles as the basic shape that gives strength and stability.
The students committed to attending each week and worked in teams of 2 or 3 to construct their models. Six students participated in the task and two bridges were completed.
The final two weeks of the exercise were dedicated to testing the strength of the bridges. Amazingly both of the bridges withstood masses of 32kg which was all of the weight available in the Science Lab.
The next task for the students will be to construct Electronic Circuits by soldering electronic components onto pre-printed circuit boards.
A big congratulations to the students for their hard work and dedication to the club!
The students are Vincent To, David Monyjang, Navi Bhasin, Rishabh Goundar, Hayden Nguyen and Zac Tuyau.

Careers Expos
Throughout May, Year 11 VCE students attended the VCE and Careers Expo at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, and Year 10 students and Year 11 Vocational Major students attended the Brimbank Careers Exploration Day at Lakeside Convention Centre. During these excursions, students were able to speak with education, training and employment providers, ask questions about their future careers and pathways, and gather resources and information from the exhibitors. Well done to our students on their participation during these events and to Ms Muratore for organising these fantastic opportunities for our students.

Art Creative Practice Excursions
This term Year 10 Art Creative Practice students visited the National Gallery of Victoria to participate in a workshop called 'Make Your Mark' which was run by the gallery educators. The workshop incorporated a gallery walk and creation of an artwork in their studio.
The VCE Art Creative Practice students also visited two art galleries this term and engaged in multiple workshops run by the gallery educators. The first gallery visit was to the National Gallery of Victoria where the students participated in a workshop run by the gallery educators called 'Writing About Art'. The second gallery visit was to the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art where the students were a part of a workshop run by gallery educators called 'VCE Visit: Art Creative Practice Gallery Tour'.

Newman College Dinner
On Friday 17 May 2024, Ms Howard accompanied Jacqueline, Esraa, Ciara, Christian and I to a Formal Dinner at Newman College, University of Melbourne. Our tour guide, a knowledgeable and kind student named Adelina, who is a former VUSC student, led us through the grand architecture of the place. We visited libraries, dormitories and formal dining areas, which we are all very grateful to have experienced. The four-storey library which was filled with so many books, more than what I could have imagined, particularly impressed me.
The tour gave us valuable insights into the campus life, social life and the logistics from the college to different universities. Newman College also provided a beautiful dinner which also included a musical performance, ‘The Girl Who Fell from the Sky’ by Joe Hisaishi, performed by two lovely Newman College members. In addition, we also got to meet Dr. Michael Keem, a senior neuropsychiatry registrar based in Melbourne. He holds a Bachelor of Biomedicine, Doctor of Medicine, and Masters of Psychiatry from the University of Melbourne.
Dr Keem is actively involved in the Medical Association for Prevention of War and talked broadly about the significance of preventing war such as the current Israel-Gaza war as well as what his life was like during his university days and what it means to live an authentic life. A twenty-minute Q and A session was also organised, which answered many inspiring questions.
Overall, this experience provided us with a cherished understanding of the College and our pursuit of further studies in Melbourne after completing our secondary schooling.
