VOCATIONAL PATHWAYS AHEAD!

The Northern Mallee Local Learning and Employment Network (NMLLEN) Job Readiness Preparation, Application and Interview Presentation is a fantastic way for students to start getting 'employment ready'.

For starters, it does exactly what it says. In a simple, clear presentation, students learn how to get ready to apply for a job (resume and cover letter writing), complete applications, and hone skills so they present well in any interview scenario. The presentation outlines employers' expectations and gives students tips on how they can best prepare themselves to meet those expectations.

Delivered in partnership with Jobs and Skills Centre and SuniTAFE, you can rest assured there are heaps of great hints and tips to help young people get a foot in the door when they're applying for their first or any new job. Thanks for visiting us, NMLLEN.

ROWING PROGRAM

Last year St Joseph’s College reinstated a once-popular rowing program.

With the assistance of the Mildura Rowing Club, we were able to introduce students to the sport of rowing by teaching students how to handle a 'shell' (boat), how to take the shell into and out of the water, how to get the correct stroke on a rowing machine, and most importantly how to row on the water.

Although everyone enjoyed the program, we were presented with a few environmental challenges. Our program began at Lake Hawthorn because the Murray River had flooded. This change of location actually helped students get used to rowing on shallow and mostly calm water without having to be too worried about direction. In Term 4 we were able to get students rowing on the picturesque Murray River. Crews rowed in quad skulls directed by coaches who were also members of college staff. The group discovered many fun opportunities to forge friendships and learn a new sport with interesting technical challenges,  particularly once they got out on the water.

The photos below show the 2023 rowing program students. The program will begin again shortly, and we look forward to many new participants enjoying the sport of rowing at our college in 2024.

MEDICATION MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION

Now that we are into the new school year, it is important that all parents, guardians, and students are aware of the St Joseph’s College Medication Management and Administration Policy.

If your child requires any medication to be taken whilst at school, it is important that the College Nurse is aware. We ask that a Medication Authority form is completed and returned to the college, along with the required medication in its original packaging. If it is prescription medication, it should have the pharmacy instruction label included.

All student medication must be stored in the First Aid Office, and students are to attend the First Aid Office when requiring their medication. Self-storage and administration of medication is not advisable as it can potentially create unsafe access to and misuse of medications by other students.

Please find attached the St Joseph’s College Medication Management and Administration Policy as well as a blank Medication Authority Form PDF for you to download, complete, and return to me, if necessary.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me via phone during office hours: Monday – Friday 8:30am – 3:30pm or by email: lclohesy@sjcmda.vic.edu.au

RECONCILIATION ACTION PLAN

The Reconciliation Action Planning Working Group met over 12 months to assess the work already being done in the college and create goals for the future.

Reconciliation Australia explains: ‘Reconciliation Action Plans (RAPs) have enabled organisations to sustainably and strategically take meaningful action to advance reconciliation. Based around the core pillars of relationships, respect, and opportunities, RAPs provide tangible and substantive benefits for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, increasing economic equity and supporting First Nations self-determination.’

The Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) includes 14 actions for the college to work towards. This is an ongoing process, and we have work to do. The link to the RAP can be accessed below.

FLEXISCHOOLS CASHLESS CANTEEN

At the end of 2022, the college released ‘Flexischools – Cashless Canteen’, designed to make ordering lunch for your child/ren easier.

The college encourages lunch to be pre-ordered, and this app will allow you to do that. Orders are paid for directly through the app and sent straight to our Canteen. (No money will be required at the Canteen.) Through the app, you can also track your order history and load money onto your child’s student card so they can purchase items directly from our Canteen. In addition, you can set up multiple children on one account and top each one's card up separately.

Flexischools Canteen class lists have been updated, and all users will be required to select the new class (year level) when they next use the platform.

Information regarding account setup is attached.

We will continue to accept EFTPOS and cash at our Canteen. Flexischools is just another option. Simplify your school life with Flexischools – Cashless Canteen today.
