Beginning of Year Student Assessments
At the beginning of each school year, we complete a range of assessments with all students. These assessments help us understand each child’s current skills, identify strengths, and determine the next steps in their learning. They are an important part of ensuring we provide targeted teaching and the right level of support and extension for every student.
Prep to Year 2
Students in Prep to Year 2 completed:
• DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills). This is a short, one on one assessment that measures key early reading skills such as letter knowledge, sounds, fluency and comprehension.
• MOI (Mathematics Online Interview). This is an individual interview style assessment that explores students’ understanding of number, place value, addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division.
Years 3 to 6
Students in Years 3 to 6 completed:
• DIBELS to assess reading fluency and comprehension.
• An open ended Mathematics Place Value assessment designed to explore students’ depth of understanding of number and place value.
• A Mathematics Fluency task focusing on accuracy and efficiency with the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
These assessments are not tests that students need to prepare for. They simply give teachers a clear picture of where each student is currently working so that teaching can be responsive, targeted and supportive from the very start of the year.
If you have any questions about your child’s progress or would like further information about these assessments, please feel free to contact your child’s classroom teacher.
