Sophie Kerdic & Edward Lai
What instrument do you play and how long have you played it?
SOPHIE: I play the clarinet and I’ve played it for about 5 years.
EDWARD: I have played the piano for 5 years. I have also been playing the flute for 2 years.
What ensembles are you in and what is something you enjoy about being in those ensembles?
SOPHIE: I am in band, Koristers, and choir. I love band because we get to learn and play new and fun pieces; I love Koristers because Mrs Sinclair is really funny and gives us hard and hilarious things to do; and finally, I love choir because you get to try new things and learn how to read music and sing.
EDWARD: Some ensembles I have been in are the KWS choirs and concert band. I enjoy being these groups because it helps me with my stage fright and it’s also very fun to be singing and playing music with my friends.
What is a performing arts skill you would like to learn this year?
SOPHIE: I would like to learn and complete grade 5 on the clarinet.
EDWARD: I want to learn how to sightread music faster and more efficiently.
What is one fun fact you would like students to know about you?
SOPHIE: A fact about me is that I am better than my older brother in swimming!
EDWARD: I take care of 2 guinea pigs named Lucky and Piplup.
Year 4 has had a flying start to the band program, with the Music Centre buzzing with sound each Thursday morning. From snare drums to trumpets, flutes to bassoons, students are already creating some exciting sounds. Please remember to bring instruments every Thursday for tutorials and band sessions. We can’t wait to hear the music come together over the next few weeks!

Students from JS Fusion Dance Ensemble along with dancers from the Senior School were fortunate to take part in a workshop with the Sydney Dance Company this week. They explored line, shape, and expressive communication. Students were encouraged students to play with levels, contrast sharp and smooth movements, and use their whole body to convey emotion—giving them a taste of the expressive style the company is known for. A surprise hit was the ‘chicken dance’ which got everyone grooving! Students were also given a sneak-peek at the routine Sydney Dance Company will perform at Orange Civic Theatre later this week. This was a fabulous opportunity for our junior and senior students to work alongside dancers from this renown dance company.
