What's happening around our school...

Prep

We have been busy in Prep over the last two weeks! Our phonics program has seen the Preps segment words into sounds in order to begin reading. Students are gaining confidence with the S, A, T, P, I, N letters and are starting to blend their sounds into words. Take a look at some of our writing using the virtual blending board and some whiteboard writing.

In Mathematics, Prep students have been enjoying the fluency game called Line-up. They are getting very good at placing number cards, in order to make the perfect 0-10 ‘line-up’. Students are also getting more confident with representing numbers on a tens frame and deciding whether two collections are equal or not equal.

Preps really loved working with their buddies as well. They looked at the similarities and differences between themselves before undertaking Kalinda Crews with their Year 5 buddy.

Grades 1& 2

Last week, we read ‘Fauna’ by Tania McCartney. We talked about the structure of informative texts, and learnt about some animals that call Australia home.

Some fun facts we loved:

  • Cassowaries don’t have a tongue. (Eliza 1W)
  • Cassowaries can jump 2 meters. (Emmie 1W)
  • Platypuses are blind underwater, and they use their bill to find food. (Aiden 1L)
  • A group of platypus is called a paddle. (Jasmine 1L)
  • Saltwater crocodiles are the most dangerous Australian animal. (Max 1/2B)
  • The cassowary is a bird that can change colour depending on how it is feeling. (Leni 1/2B)
  • The cassowary has a casque on its head. It has a spongy middle. (Olivia 2LK)
  • Koalas can swim. (Austin 2LK)
  • Dugongs can grow to 3 and a half meters long. (James 2C)
  • Dugongs can stay underwater for over 2 minutes. (Harry 2C)

We then used our new knowledge about these animals to write our own information report.

Grades 3&4

Word Origins (spelling program)

In Grades 3 and 4 this week, students have been enjoying learning about the root word ‘act’, which means ‘to do’. Students have focused on three words that include this morpheme, such as react, active and action. They have learnt the definition of each word and practised using these words in sentences. We have also worked together to identify what prefixes and suffixes could be added to the root word ‘act’ to create a different word, such as re + act + ed = reacted.
