Acknowledgement of Country

We acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung People of the Kulin nation; past, present and those who will walk with us into the future. We acknowledge the rich and unique cultural and spiritual relationships to the land, waters and seas, educational practices and the hopes of all First Nations Peoples. We do this in the spirit of reconciliation as we move to a place of justice and partnership - together we work, learn, play and care for one another and this land.

Interschool sports and the power of teamwork

Today I had the pleasure of attending our second interschool sports gala day for the year, joining our cricket team as they represented the school with pride. Events like these are always a highlight because they showcase so much more than just athletic ability. They provide valuable opportunities for students to work together, support one another, and develop the skills that come from being part of a team.

Team sports play a powerful role in students’ development. Through competition, students learn the importance of perseverance, cooperation and resilience. Just as importantly, they learn how to be gracious in both victory and defeat. Learning to be a good winner and a good loser is an essential life skill. Celebrating success with humility and responding to disappointment with determination helps build character and emotional maturity. I was incredibly proud of the way our students conducted themselves throughout the day, demonstrating teamwork, encouragement and sportsmanship.

Supporting healthy technology habits

As a school community, we continue to have conversations with students about the responsible use of technology, particularly mobile phones. Some of our senior students bring phones to school, and we understand that these families provide phones as children become more independent and may be walking to and from school.

Students who bring phones are expected to follow our school procedures by handing them in to their teacher during the day. We are also making it very clear that students should not be using their phones on school grounds before or after school unless they need to contact a parent or carer for an urgent reason. Our staff and school office are always available to assist a student with contacting parents and carers too.

Research continues to highlight the impact that overuse of technology can have on young people. Developing minds benefit greatly from time spent engaging in face-to-face conversation, physical activity and creative play. Opportunities to play outside, read, participate in sport, and simply spend time talking and laughing with friends are all essential for healthy development and wellbeing.

As a school, we want our grounds to remain a place where students connect with one another, play together and build positive relationships. We appreciate the support of families in reinforcing these expectations and helping young people develop balanced and healthy technology habits.
