I am...

Tanya Vaughan, Deputy Principal - Head of Primary

Our Primary Staffroom is currently showcasing some of our 2026 Prep students’ artwork. They are gorgeous! Each artwork has 2 parts – a ‘self-portrait’ and a picture of what they hope to be when they grow up. We have very aspirational 5 and 6-year-olds…they want to be anything and everything including a zookeeper, a doctor, a farmer, a Lego maker and even someone who owns the wave pool!

One of the greatest privileges we have as Christian Educators is to work in partnership with our parents as we teach our students about the wonder and awesomeness of our God, and help them to understand who they are as his children. Throughout our assemblies this term, as we consider God’s purposes and plans for each of their lives, we are focusing on the following ‘I am’ statements:

  • I am a child of God
  • I am a courageous learner
  • I am a respectful, and
  • I am responsible

When you stop and think about it, we ask a lot of our little learners. We want them to be kind, courageous, respectful and responsible EVERY SINGLE DAY!   Understanding that none of us (including our children) are perfect, it takes great commitment and effort to show up well each morning, learn hard and be our best selves all the time….and let’s be real, it doesn’t always come easy.

However, we know that in every opportunity, every interaction, every moment of learning and in every playful experience, there is a teachable moment – one that will help them grow and learn more about themselves, others and God, and along the way, discover more about the incredible plans that God has for each one of them.

At every assembly and in every classroom this creed is being declared by every student and staff member as a daily reminder of who they are and whose they are as a child of God:

How precious it is hearing them say “I am the beloved of God”.

Our “Getting to Know You” Parent Teacher interviews have provided a wonderful foundation for the partnership we will share with you this year. Thank you for taking the time to meet, share and invest in conversation with our teaching staff.

As we engage in this partnership, let’s encourage our young learners to be all that God has created them to be as they live and learn within our dynamic DCC community, grounded in the truth of God’s word, anchored in Jesus and courageous in all that they are and all that they do and say as they share Jesus’ love at home, at school and at play.
