Assistant Principal's Report

What a fabulous two weeks we have had at Burwood East Primary School. Our students have played an active role in establishing classroom expectations and building strong learning communities. Students are displaying the school values by respecting learning time, being prepared and responsible for their actions, and displaying confidence and resilience when facing new challenges.
We ask parents and carers to regularly check their Compass accounts for information via events and newsfeeds. Currently we have events for:
Google Classroom (Year 2-6)
Swimming (Foundation - Year 6)
Interschool sports (Year 6)
For your child to participate in these events we require parent consent and payment (if applicable). If you do not wish for your child to participate we kindly request you decline the event.
Annual Implementation Plan (AIP)
A school Annual Implementation Plan (AIP) is a 12-month document outlining how a school will implement its School Strategic Plan (SSP) goals. It defines specific actions, roles, responsibilities, and success criteria for improving student outcomes, focusing on literacy, numeracy, and wellbeing. All Victorian Government Schools develop an AIP annually in collaboration with staff and school council.
We are excited to share more about Burwood East Primary School 2026 Annual Implementation Plan. This year, we have carefully selected goals informed by student data, staff reflection, and community feedback to ensure our priorities are purposeful and impactful. Alongside these goals, we have identified key improvement strategies (KIS) to build capability and improve student outcomes.
Our priorities focus on:
Goal 1: Optimise the learning growth of every student in literacy and numeracy.
KIS: Deepen and embed whole school collaborative approaches to build curriculum knowledge, and evidence based instructional approaches.
Goal 2: Empower all students as active agents in their learning and wellbeing.
KIS: Build teacher practice of High Impact Teaching Strategies (HITS) to support learner agency.
To achieve these goals, we have identified specific actions and strategies, including redefining our instructional model to align to the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0. This model focuses on the Elements of Learning and the Elements of Teaching. We continue to engage in professional learning, participate in collegiate visits, and reflect on feedback to strengthen our practice.
Teaching and Learning at BEPS
We believe students learn best when they feel safe, supported, and connected within a calm and orderly environment. Our classrooms are centred on consistent routines, clear expectations, and a sense of belonging. We implement the Positive Classroom Management Strategies (PCMS), building our understanding and skills in supporting and nurturing student learning, engagement and wellbeing.
Our teaching is explicit, where new concepts are taught in small, carefully sequenced steps and connects to prior knowledge. Teachers enhance student learning through evidence-based practices, including daily reviews and retrieval tasks, explicit instruction, regular checks for understanding, and guided application. These strategies help students consolidate knowledge in long-term memory while developing confidence, fluency, and the ability to apply their learning independently.
Across Foundation to Year 6 our inquiry investigations and specialist programs focus on developing core knowledge, skills and strategies. The Victorian Curriculum 2.0 supports this by ensuring content is taught in a logical, cumulative sequence, so students steadily build their understanding over time. We investigate and question big ideas that integrate a range of learning areas and capabilities. This term our big idea is ‘I am Me’.
By aligning our goals and key improvement strategies with evidence-based teaching and a focus on wellbeing, we aim to create a learning environment where our students Learn. Create. Inspire.
Have a great weekend,
Edwina and Teri
