Fish Traps
Our Year Seven students visited the Oyster Harbour Fish Traps last Thursday. They were greeted by local Menang Elders Aunty Vernice Gillies and Uncle Lester Coyne, along with Larry Blight and Jessikah Woods. The group shared a wealth of cultural knowledge about this very special place, including stories, bush foods and insights into the ingenious ways the Fish Traps were constructed and used.
Chef Nick cooked up a storm on the BBQ, serving delicious fish burgers, accompanied by fruit generously supplied by Nicklup Orchard.
Uncle Lester presented the school with a wooden traditional tool coated in resin. This marks the 19th year that Year Seven students from Great Southern Grammar have been welcomed onto this site by Menang Elders and have learned about the importance of caring for Country. Much has changed over this time, including the development of a path linking the Fish Traps and the school; no more trudging through the foreshore! The signs placed around the site are decorated with motifs designed by past Year Seven students, adding to the appreciation and preservation of this culturally significant area.
Great Southern Youth Art Award
The Great Southern Youth Art Award is coming up at the Albany Town Hall. There are still spaces available and it is a wonderful opportunity for students to showcase their creative talents and have their work displayed in the gallery. Entries close 6 March.

Celebrating Staff Achievement
At Great Southern Grammar, it is not only our students who achieve remarkable things, but our staff also continue to distinguish themselves. We are delighted to congratulate Dr Giles Watson, our talented English and Drama Teacher, on the release of his latest book 'Eungedup' and for being featured in Southerly Magazine.
This is a significant professional accomplishment and we are proud to celebrate Dr Watson’s ongoing contribution to the literary and arts community, as well as to our school.
