Scuba Diving at Blairgowrie Pier

This year both Year 12 Outdoor Education classes participated in a beginner scuba dive experience with BayPlay at Blairgowrie Pier. The students were excited to partake in their first ever scuba dive experience, even more so after the previous planned session had been cancelled due to extreme winds. The session began with a beginner lesson in the dive pool where students learned a range of skills including how to equalize, how to breathe through a regulator, how to maintain buoyancy and how to communicate effectively with others under water.

After the students learned the basics it was off to Blairgowrie Pier where in groups of 4, the students participated in a 45 minute ocean dive with a lead instructor. Students were able to experience a range of wildlife including stingrays, puffer fish and weedy sea dragons and a range of marine flora including nudibranchs and colourful sea sponges.

The sun was out and the visibility was excellent, with all students demonstrating excellence in applying their new skills to an Ocean Environment. Students demonstrated persistence throughout the day overcoming some challenging elements to successfully demonstrate competent scuba diving skills. All students walked away from the experience wanting to further develop their scuba skills and experience other marine environments. All in all it was a fantastic experience.

Rock Climbing at Bayside Rock

This year the Year 10 Outdoor Education classes participated in a beginner rock climbing and bouldering session at Bayside Rock. The students were eager with anticipation to challenge themselves on a range of walls and bouldering courses. The session began with an introductory lesson on belaying where students learned the necessary skills to belay a climber up and down the face of the wall. This skill is essential to ensure no individual falls from a high elevation and the students were all able to demonstrate this to a high standard.

As the climbing began, some students went straight for the most challenging course they could find, with challenging grips, long gaps between rocks, and even some aerial manoeuvre’s required to ascend the wall. Others chose a steadier route gradually building up their skill sets as the session progressed to gradually build up their confidence in applying appropriate rock climbing techniques in order to reach the top.

The second half of the session consisted of bouldering, where students would choose a level of difficulty and attempt to reach the top by finding a specific line on the wall to climb and attempting to complete it without assistance from rocks outside of these lines. For this task students went without a harness, knowing they had the safety of the mats to land on if they were to fall. Some of these lines required students to climb upside down and complete a dyno wall where they would launch themselves mid-air to reach a higher grip. Needless to say the students thoroughly enjoyed this experience and were able to demonstrate a range of manoeuvre’s throughout to progress through the different levels of difficulty.

Overall the students walked away from the experience having developed a range of new skill sets, and a great sense of satisfaction from what they had achieved.

Summit Cheerleading Competition

At the end of April three Patterson River Secondary students travelled to America to compete in an international cheerleading competition. All three students were very lucky to have such an amazing opportunity and from all reports, they did their club and Australia proud!

Ms. Adams

At the end of April, we headed off to Tampa in Florida to compete in an international cheer leading competition. We spent three days there before we headed off to the All-Star Sports Resort at Disneyworld, where the Summit competition was held. We trained a lot before the competition day. During the competition we were all very excited and nervous because it was one of the biggest competitions in the world. We were happy with how our routine went as a lot of work and preparation was put into it. Once the camp was over, we spent three days exploring the Disney Parks. Our favourite part was the fireworks at the castle. Overall, it was an amazing opportunity, and we are all so glad we could experience it.

Intermediate Girls Soccer

On Wednesday 22nd May Patterson River Secondary College entered a team in the NPD Intermediate Girls Soccer Competition at Seaford North Reserve. Our team had played very little soccer before this competition so a crash course in soccer training was required. Our first game against Frankston High School was a steep learning curve against a well-seasoned outfit. We fought hard and managed to score a goal against a miserly defence but lost 1-7. Our next game against EMC was a very close encounter against once again experienced soccer players. The final score was 1-2, but I could not have been prouder of the team’s growth and skill development throughout the training and competition day. They embraced the soccer rules and strategies and competed against strong competition with a mixture of Year 8 and Year 9 girls against Year 10s. Well done girls.

Junior Boys Netball

On Thursday May 2nd, the Junior Boys Netball teams from Patterson River showcased their ability at the Northern Peninsula Division competition. Seventeen students from Year 7 and 8 proudly represented the College across two teams, A and B. Impressively, both teams emerged victorious in their respective divisions, maintaining flawless records throughout the day.

Special recognition is due to the A team, whose dominant performance saw them netting a remarkable 81 goals while conceding a mere 10 goals across four matches. This achievement speaks volumes about the skill and dedication of every player on the court. The team's success was underpinned by a solid defense led by Noah H, Cuan R, and Kaydn D, while the midcourt displayed remarkable speed and agility thanks to Paxon S and Baxter Q. Down the shooting end, Tait W, Jack S, and Zayden K showcased unwavering accuracy. The cohesion among the players was evident, making their gameplay a delight to watch. Each member demonstrated excellent skill level and a thorough understanding of Netball rules. Their outstanding performance has earned them a spot in the upcoming Southern Metropolitan Region Finals in August.

Intermediate Girls Football

On Tuesday 28th May, intermediate girls played football. It was a tough competition with many girls in both our team and in the opposition all playing local footy. The girls managed to win 2 out of the 4 games they played.

Throughout the day the girls played hard and tough, many coming off with injuries but hopefully enjoying the day never the less. Goals were kicked by Allira R 3, Harli L 2, Maddy C 1, Ciera D 1.

Thank you very much to all the girls for their competitive spirit and being such a supportive team, it was a pleasure to coach, and a big thanks to super coach Ms. Davola.
