Classroom Representatives Program Update

Mr Noel has placed a request in Compass calling for parents/carers to sign up to be a Classroom Representative.  So far we have only had parents from 5 classes sign up!  Each class requires up to two people to help in this important role. Not only is it a great way to become involved in the school community, but also a wonderful opportunity to meet others and make friends, learn more about the way the school functions and have a positive input into your child’s year at South Melbourne Primary School.

The type of support we are seeking is:

  • Supporting and fostering a strong sense of community within the school
  • Welcoming new families to the class and arranging appropriate introductions with other parents of the class
  • Organising social functions (e.g. morning teas and dinners for our parents, class play dates for the children) to foster relationships and friendships within the class and wider community
  • (When requested by teachers) encouraging, and organising parent helpers for class activities and programs like swimming, reading, sports events, excursions
  • Encouraging community participation in whole school activities (i.e. Art Show, Open Day, Celebration of Learning Day, Family Fundraising BBQ’s, Raffles etc)

Please express your interest via this Link to Class Representative Expression of Interest

Cake Stall - Celebration of Learning Day

On Monday, your child will come home with a Bake Sale package. We are asking all SMPS families to please bake a scrumptious item/s on the evening of Tuesday 14th May; to package it up in the provided plate/bag; and deliver it to school on the morning of Wednesday 15th May.

It’s that simple!

  • Over the Weekend: Plan what you will be baking and purchase the ingredients (no fresh cream please)
  • Tuesday 14th May: Bake your scrumptious treat, and package it up.
  • Wednesday 15th May: In the morning, bring your packaged-up baked goods to school, and hand them over to a member of the FAF team out front of the Art Room.
  • Return to SMPS at 2.40pm to enjoy the Celebration of Learning afternoon.
  • Remember to bring your picnic blankets, chairs, warm jackets/coats etc. for the community BBQ and after-school activities.

Celebration of Learning Day

We encourage all current families to join us on Wednesday 15th May from 2:40pm to 4:40pm as we celebrate our students' learning and achievements.  We will be opening up the learning spaces and giving our parents an opportunity to walk through the school and participate in a lesson with your child.  This will be followed by a community BBQ and cake stall, with some fun activities like face painting, student musical performances, activities and games on the forecourt.

To make this event a huge success – WE NEED YOU!  Our community support, donations and volunteer help is desperately needed, so please get involved, however you can – big or small!

We still require many more volunteers in order for this event to go ahead.  At the moment we have a very small number of parents commit to helping out on the day, just 10 parents have signed up! Please volunteer and support your child's school by filling out the VOLUNTEER SURVEY here.

We need VOLUNTEER HELPERS for the Sausage Sizzle and Cake Stall between 1pm to 5pm: Set up, Cooks, food servers and cashiers. If you can help for even just 30 minutes, please register via the link provided. You’re welcome to volunteer for more than one time-slot or to help set up or pack up – the more help we have, the less work for each person to do!  If you have any queries, or can help in any way possible, please email faf@smps.vic.edu.au and we’ll be in touch.  We can guide you through how easy it is to get involved and support our school community.

If you can donate any of the below items, please drop them off to the office as soon as possible – please get involved and see how easy it is to support our wonderful school.

  • Cans of soft drinks and bottles of water – anyone have a Costco membership that is willing to help with purchasing these or donate a slab or two from the supermarket?
  • Foil trays for cooked meat – donate a pack or 2?
  • Long Handled Tongs for cooking on the BBQ
  • Cleaning Wipes / Paper Towel - donate a pack or 2?
  • Serviettes – donate a pack or 2?
  • Disposable food handling gloves – donate a box

Thank you for your support

Camp Sponsorships

Attending School Camp is a highlight of the year for many SMPS students in Grades 3-6. The opportunity to spend time out of the city, with their friends and teachers, in the great outdoors is an invaluable experience and cherished memory of a student’s time at South Melbourne Primary School. We are looking for support from the SMPS community to ensure as many children as possible can have the opportunity to go on Camp. The cost of Camp this year will be $500-$550 due to an increase in costs from the YMCA, and sadly not every family can afford this expense. If you are interested in making a donation that would go towards sending students on Camp, we would be very grateful for your incredible generosity. Any amount can be donated and your name would remain anonymous. If interested, please email Miss Megan at megan.hartwick@smps.vic.edu.au
