VCE Geography Excursion, Summerlands Phillip Island
Josh Atkins, House Captain - Solomon
"Our Unit 3 &4 VCE Geography class recently went on excursion to Summerlands Peninsula in Phillip Island. The purpose was to gain a more extensive understanding of the change in land use that occurred from 1985 until the present day. As part of our Unit 3 Changing The Land study design, it's the perfect case study.
The land use change experienced within this region consists of the government and other organisations buying back houses and other properties to form nature parks and reserves that preserve the natural environment and the animals which inhabit it.
An example of these animals includes the large population of Little Penguins which occupy the Summerlands. This experience gave us the ability to observe the famous Penguin Parade that evening. Prior to the viewing, we examined the Penguin Parade Visitor Centre and the scenic views from parks that have been protected.
This excursion was overwhelmingly positive and enjoyable for everyone, the cohort thoroughly benefitted from the field trip. A massive thanks to Mr Lalor, Mr Healy and Mr Hoult for supervising the classes and for allowing everyone to buy some Macca's on the way home."
Year 7 Ceramics
Zac B, Year 7
"Ceramics was fun because it was something new that a lot of us year 7’s haven’t done before. I made a character that had one eye, long hair and colours that made my character pop. In the first lesson we shaped our characters. In the second lesson we added facial hair and objects like hats, fins or long hair. In the third lesson we painted colours that suited our characters. I learnt that ceramics is a long process and that you have to be patient and be very careful because the clay is very fragile."
Indonesian Cultural Immersion Experience
Oliver B
"Students studying Indonesian Language across Years 9 to 12 took a train to the city to watch an Indonesian film at ACMI in Fed Square. The movie was called “Surga di Bawah Langit” meaning “Heaven under the sky”. Many of us observed the film's touching theme about the hardships of growing up in poverty in Indonesia. There was also a traditional dance performance, with dancers wearing traditional Balinese costumes.
After that, we walked down Swanston Street to an Indonesian restaurant called Nelayan where we had the opportunity to try a large variety of different Indonesian foods. The beef rendang and the ayam goreng was “Enak!” (tasty).
After lunch we explored a supermarket that sold a large variety of Indonesian snacks, and I bought some Indonesian tea. It was a fun day that really helped us experience more Indonesian culture, and I am I’m really glad to have gone."
Vocational Major Personal Development
Jye E, Year 11
"Our Personal Development class assignment was to create a stall project for an organisation that is trying to do good. My group decided to do our project on Nutrition Australia, an organisation to promote better health and overall wellbeing. To help promote our stall, we agreed to choose a Nutrition Australia's recipe for banana smoothie. Using the recipe, we made our smoothie as a way to show people just what Nutrition Australia does. We set up our stall in front of the Visual Arts building and there were a solid amount of people checking out our stalls and teachers asking about our organisation."
Year 9 Popular History MCG Excursion
Jack G
"Our History of Popular Culture class embarked on an excursion to the Australian Museum of Sport at the MCG as part of our studies of ‘The History of Sport in Australia.’ Led by a passionate volunteer, we dived into the past of the rich Australian Sporting history. The museum's exhibits, adorned with relics of sporting triumphs, transported us through time. From vintage cricket bats to the jerseys of rugby giants, each artifact spoke volumes about Australia's sporting legacy.
A highlight was the guided tour of the MCG itself, where we stood on legendary turf soaking in all the memories and passionate wins and heartbreaking losses. Whilst we felt like we were reliving history, we felt a deep reverence for the champions who had graced its grounds.
As we bid farewell to the MCG, our hearts brimmed with newfound admiration for the enduring spirit of Australian sports. In the museum halls, we had not only relieved history but also took a peek into Australia's rich sporting future.
A week following the excursion, Ms. Stammers facilitated a review session to gauge what we had learned from our visit. The overwhelming consensus was a profound sense of how much we had gained from the experience."
