QAGOMA Excursion

Year 10 Visual Art students recently enjoyed an excursion to view several exhibitions at QAGOMA - Queensland Art Gallery / Gallery of Modern Art, Southbank.

In visiting theCreative Generation exhibition of works by Year 12 Art students from across the state in 2023, our young artists were able to evaluate the standard of resolution required for A standard responses to tasks.

The Australian Collection provided an opportunity to work in teams to play a game of Eye-Spy with detailed images taken from works on display. The selection included several well documented works previously studied, or pivotal to upcoming tasks. It was great to witness our students engage so readily in the hunt and share their joy upon discovering works already familiar to them.

The mudunama kundana wandaraba jarribirri Judy Watson show presented our classes with a significant opportunity to engage with the stories and layered, symbolic imagery of a mature artists at the height of her expressive and artistic powers. They were amazed at the surface treatment, sophistication of imagery and the feeling of awe which settled upon them within the space.

Lastly the small exhibition Birds of Paradise immersed students within the work of the late Bribie Island based painter, Ian Fairweather. His work Kite flying (1958) has been hung within a black space, and illuminated with soft lighting, in appreciation of the sensitive paints he used on carboard – a stark expression of his humble resources and accommodation on the then bush island in the late 50s, 60s and early 70s. It was a huge WOW moment for all.

Our young artists represented our school with zest, and expressed genuine humility in the presence of significant and diverse works of art. We thank them for reminding us of the power of an arts education.

Choir Workshop

Last Thursday night our Chorale attended a workshop with internationally renowned choral conductor and singer Tori Longdon at the Salvation Army’s Brisbane City Temple. The workshop was run by ANCA  (Australian National Choral Association) and our students joined with singers from Mansfield State High School, Brisbane State High School and Mt Alvernia College for an afternoon of singing. Tori set a high bar for enthusiastic performance, sight singing and part singing in her really engaging workshop. The Chorale really enjoyed the opportunity to sing in a very large ensemble in a beautiful acoustic. Thank you to Mrs Collins for arranging this experience for our singers – it was a wonderful experience.

Fanfare

This year we will be hosting an Instrumental Fanfare heat for our district in the JA Robertson Hall on Thursday 23 and Friday 24 May. Fanfare is the biennial state-wide festival of bands and orchestras from Queensland state schools. It showcases the exciting music-making that occurs in school-based ensembles across the state. The emphasis for Fanfare is on improving the quality of ensembles, promoting the highest possible standard of performance, striving for excellence and encouraging participation.

After the heats, held in multiple locations across the Metropolitan North region there will be a regional final at the Old Museum Buidling on Wednesday 19th June. We are hopeful that some of our groups are selected to progress to this level. Following the regional finals, up to 5 primary ensembles and 5 secondary ensembles will be selected to take part in the primary and secondary state finals in Brisbane on Thursday 15 August and Friday 16 August.

All of our bands and string ensembles will be competing on Thursday 23rd May in the following sections:

Section 1 – 8am-11am

Section 4 – 4.20-6.00pm
