Specialist Feature News:

Selamat Siang,

This Term in Science our students have been enjoying their exciting Earth and Space units! Foundations are exploring Weather, 1/2s are investigating Earth's resources, 3/4s are focusing on Earth's rotation, and 5/6 are diving into the Solar System!

This week our 1/2s have been looking at minerals and learning about how they are an important resource for our bodies, as well as for making products and producing electricity. They are becoming familiar with renewable and non-renewable resources.

1/2 students have also been monitoring seeds that were planted in soil and sand last week, as part of an ongoing investigation! 1/2S are seeing some impressive growth already!

Our 5/6s have been exploring a lot of interactive resources that show them amazing visuals of space throughout time! This week they have been investigating the history of space exploration, and creating timelines of space-related milestones.

Some interesting facts our 5/6 students have found or shared this week:

  • The Soviet Union were responsible for a lot of the first space milestones; including the first satellite to orbit Earth (Sputnik), the first animal to orbit Earth (Laika), the first man to orbit the Earth (Yuri Garagin), the first woman in space (Valentina Tereshkova) and the first space station.
    - Nathan, 5/6S
  • Two years ago I learned that our sun is the second smallest star in the universe. Today scientists believe that it is actually an average sized star! Space discoveries are always changing!
    - Freddie, 5/6FL
  • Venus is almost the same size as Earth, but spins the opposite way!
    - Jess 5/6FL
  • There were turtles that orbited the moon in 1968 and made it back to Earth safely!
    - Sara 5/6FL
  • The first dog in space was Laika, she was 3 years old and sadly passed away from overheating
    - Aaliyah 5/6FL
  • Did you know a supernova gets up to 1,000,000,000 degrees celcius? That's 6000x hotter than the sun's core!
    - Orson, 5/6N
  • In 2018, Elon Musk sent his Tesla to space. It's orbiting the sun, and you can track its location online!
    - Anoshan 5/6C

ATTN Carers!

In Term 3, we will be focusing on Chemistry, and would love community engagement from expert parents and carers! If you work in the STEM field or have experience with Chemistry, we would love the students to learn from you. If you're interested in this opportunity, please send me an email at beth.cardwell@education.vic.gov.au

Have a wonderful week everyone!

Terima Kasih,
