Prep News

Dear Prep Families,
We’ve had another exciting week in Prep, filled with celebrations, creativity and curiosity.
100 Days of Prep
This week, we officially celebrated 100 magical days of Prep. The students looked absolutely fabulous dressed as 100-year-olds – what a sight! We had a special certificate ceremony to recognise this wonderful milestone. A highlight of the day was a fun challenge where students had 100 seconds to count 100 objects in teams. It sparked great discussion about teamwork, counting strategies, and problem-solving.
We also had a surprise visit from Amber, our beloved student teacher from last term, which made the day even more special.
Literacy
In Literacy, we’ve been revising our knowledge of the digraphs /ll/, /ss/, and /ff/ in reading, writing and spelling. The students are becoming more confident in identifying and using these digraphs across all areas of literacy.
We have also been building fluency through partner reading, which is helping students develop confidence and comprehension.
We’ve launched into preparations for our Writer’s Festival for Book Week. Using a range of fun and imaginative writing prompts, students have been planning, drafting, and editing their stories like real authors. The creativity is flowing!
Mathematics
Our focus in Maths has been on subitising – the ability to instantly recognise the number of objects in a group without counting them one by one.
Subitising is important because it helps students develop number sense, which lays the foundation for addition, subtraction, and beyond. We’ve been using different objects (dice, dot cards, fingers, and everyday items) to explore how we can see and understand numbers in different ways.
We’ve also continued working in pairs and small groups to solve problems and talk through our thinking.
Inquiry
We’ve just launched our exciting new Inquiry Unit where we’re travelling around the world to explore different cultures and communities.
Our first stop is Thailand. We received our boarding passes, boarded our “plane”, and explored Thai culture, language, food, and festivals.
We’re especially looking forward to a Thai food experience next Tuesday with a very special guest – Jane (Krystal’s mum). If you are available and would like to help on the day, please let your child’s teacher know – we’d love your support.
Show and Tell – Favourite Book
Our Show and Tell focus has been on students sharing their favourite books and explaining why they enjoy them.
Here are some of the reflections we’ve heard so far:
Zion: "I like this book because it reminds me of when we moved from New Zealand to Australia. This book was given to me by my kindergarten teacher."
Henry: "I like this book because it is funny, it has a funny green animal on every page."
Jehaan: "I like this book because it is about being brave and I like the pictures."
Ezra: "I like the adventure"
Joaquin: "I like this book because it has captain America and he has a shield."
Jake: "I like this book because it’s funny… so funny."
We look forward to hearing from more students next week.
