E-Bike Safety

Dear School Community,
I hope this message finds you well.
We are writing to you today out of growing concern for the safety and wellbeing of our students and wider community, following a number of recent incidents involving e-bikes (electric bicycles) in the local area.
While we understand that e-bikes can be a convenient mode of transport, it is important to be aware of the legal and safety requirements for riding them in Victoria. Under Victorian law, an e-bike (or "power-assisted bicycle") must:
· Have a motor that assists only while pedalling and cuts out over 25km/h.
· Be limited to 250 watts of motor power if it is classified as a "pedalec" (European standard).
· Be ridden by a person who is at least 16 years old if the bike has a throttle or motor assistance not compliant with pedalec rules.
· Be used with a properly fitted and fastened helmet.
· Not be used on footpaths unless the rider is under 13 or has a disability and is accompanied by an adult.
Unfortunately, we are seeing increased reports of unsafe riding behaviour, underage students riding e-bikes, and near-misses in our local streets and near school zones. These pose a significant risk not only to the riders themselves but also to pedestrians and other road users.
As such, we are reminding all families that e-bikes are not to be brought to school under any circumstances. Students found bringing or using e-bikes on or near school grounds will have parents called to come and collect the e-bike so that we are keeping our students safe at all times.
We encourage all families to take this opportunity to talk with their children about road safety, the law, and appropriate travel options to and from school. If your child is using any type of bicycle, scooter, or other personal transport device, please ensure they wear a helmet and follow all relevant traffic and pedestrian rules.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our school and community safe.
