Stay Well This Winter! Health Tips for Our School Community ❄️

As winter has well and truly settled in, it’s the perfect time to focus on keeping our children and families healthy, happy, and active. With colder temperatures and more time spent indoors, winter can bring an increase in colds, flu, and other illnesses. But with a few simple habits, we can all enjoy a safe and healthy season.

Here are some helpful health promotion ideas to keep in mind this winter:

🥦 1. Boost Immunity with Nutritious Foods

Encourage your children to eat a rainbow of fruits and vegetables! Foods rich in vitamin C (like oranges, kiwifruit and capsicum) and zinc (like wholegrains and lean meats) help support the immune system. Warm soups, stews, and homemade veggie-packed meals are perfect for chilly days.

💧 2. Stay Hydrated

Even in cooler weather, our bodies need water to stay healthy. Encourage kids to drink water regularly, especially if they’re less active indoors.

😴 3. Prioritise Sleep

A good night’s sleep is essential for growth and immunity. Aim for consistent bedtimes and reduce screen time in the hour before sleep. A cozy bedtime routine with stories or quiet music can help our children wind down.

🧼 4. Wash Hands Often

Colds and flu spread easily, especially in close-contact environments like schools. Reminding children to wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially before eating, after blowing their nose, or after using the toilet.

🧤 5. Rug Up When Heading Out

Encourage children to dress in layers when heading outdoors – especially during early mornings. Don’t forget hats, scarves, and gloves on extra cold days!

🏃‍♀️ 6. Keep Moving

Even though it's tempting to stay indoors, keeping active is great for both physical and mental health. Try indoor obstacle courses, family dance-offs, or head out for brisk walks or bike rides when the sun is out.

💉 7. Consider the Flu Vaccine

The flu can hit hard, especially for young children. Annual flu vaccines are available and recommended for kids over 6 months. Speak to your GP or local pharmacy about your options.

🧠 8. Care for Mental Wellbeing

Winter can sometimes bring the "blues." Keep routines predictable and positive. Encourage time for creativity, connection, and play. If you notice any changes in your child’s mood or behaviour, talk to a trusted health professional.

By building healthy habits now, we can all enjoy a winter full of warmth, wellness, and wonder. Stay safe, stay cozy, and thank you for supporting our school community!
