On our recent Curriculum Day, staff engaged in a full day of professional learning focused on strengthening our whole-school practices in wellbeing, behaviour, safety, culture, and learning.
We began the day with an engaging and thought-provoking session led by Kristy from Restorative Pathways. This session explored the philosophy of Restorative Practice, which views relationships and people as the most important aspect of schools and communities. Schools that embrace this philosophy prioritise building and maintaining positive relationships, creating supportive learning environments, and establishing fair, democratic systems. A restorative approach seeks to repair harm caused by mistakes by working with those most affected.
Core content included:
Staff also participated in a review of our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) procedures. This included refining our shared expectations, ensuring a consistent and fair approach to student behaviour, and reinforcing the importance of building inclusive environments where every child feels safe and supported.
Another focus area was understanding the functional aspects of behaviour. Staff explored why behaviours occur and how we can respond with empathy, structure, and proactive support to better meet students' individual needs.
At Roberts McCubbin Primary School, we are committed to creating a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment where every student can thrive. As part of our ongoing work with School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS), we are seeking input from our school community to help shape the way we support positive behaviour and wellbeing across the school.
We invite you to share your thoughts, experiences, and suggestions by answering a few short questions. Your feedback will play an important role in helping us ensure our behaviour expectations reflect our shared values and meet the needs of all students and families.
Thank you for being an important part of our school community.
We continued with the day and reviewed our Respectful Relationships program, with an emphasis on strengthening our practices to respond to child safety concerns, and ensuring that all students feel safe and valued. This included a focus on embedding the explicit teaching of social and emotional skills, celebrating Indigenous cultures and identities, and cultivating respectful relationships. We also explored how to actively address gender stereotypes, prevent bullying, and support students in developing help-seeking strategies.
The day concluded with powerful presentations from our school leaders, who showcased strategies we are embedding across the school to enhance teaching and learning. These included the use of explicit instruction, regular checks for understanding, adaptive teaching practices, and a continued focus on improving learning outcomes for all students.
This professional learning day reaffirmed our commitment to creating a positive, respectful, and high-achieving learning environment for every child.
A reminder that any families that made donations to our Building Fund or Library Fund can claim these contributions as tax deductions.
