Last Friday marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Construction Immersion students as they commenced a hands-on fencing and landscaping project on the flats. With sleeves rolled up and tools in hand, the students tackled the task of expanding a fenced-in area to enhance both privacy and functionality for the residence.
The day began with the erection of temporary fencing and the careful dismantling of existing posts to make way for a larger enclosure. Despite the inclement weather, the students made the most of the conditions, using the window of opportunity to concrete in guide posts and mark cut zones for minor excavation and post hole digging.
Two main posts were successfully positioned and clamped in place, allowing the concrete to set securely. Under the expert guidance of Mr Andrew Martin, students mixed concrete and gained valuable insights into essential techniques, including the importance of sloping the concrete away from the posts. This method not only facilitates water runoff but also helps prevent long-term corrosion - an important lesson in durability and maintenance.
The project offered a dynamic learning environment where theory met practice, and students demonstrated teamwork, problem-solving, and growing confidence in their construction skills. With the groundwork laid, the team looks forward to continuing the transformation of the space in the coming weeks.
Stay tuned for more updates as the students bring this project to life - one post at a time!
