Learning and Teaching News

We are excited to announce that next term we will be hosting our much-anticipated Tri-Annual Art Show, a special event that shines a spotlight on the creativity and artistic talents of our students. This year’s theme, “The Great Southern Land,” promises a rich and powerful exploration of all things Australian.

Students across all year levels will be creating unique pieces of visual art that reflect the diverse stories, landscapes, and identities of Australia. Their artworks will delve into themes such as First Nations histories and cultures, iconic Australian landmarks, famous sporting moments, and stories that have shaped our nation. Whether it’s the red sands of the outback, the energy of the footy field, or the wisdom of ancient Dreamtime tales, every piece will offer a window into the Great Southern Land through the eyes of our young artists.

The evening will be a celebration of colour, creativity, and community. Families and friends are warmly invited to attend and explore the incredible work produced by our students. There will be opportunities to engage with the artworks and see how Visual Arts enriches the educational journey of our learners.

Visual Arts is an essential learning area within the Victorian Curriculum, supporting the development of students' creativity, imagination and critical thinking skills. Through hands-on learning and personal expression, students are empowered to explore their identities, connect with their communities, and make meaning of the world around them.

Art encourages students to think creatively, communicate ideas visually, and develop confidence in expressing themselves. It also enhances fine motor skills, problem-solving, collaboration and an appreciation for diverse cultures and perspectives.

By engaging with the theme of “The Great Southern Land,” students not only create stunning artworks, but also deepen their understanding of Australian heritage, history, and contemporary society.

What’s Happening This Term

In preparation for next term’s exhibition, students this term will be focusing on creating and refining their art pieces. This includes exploring different mediums and techniques, planning their ideas, and drawing inspiration from their learning across the curriculum.

Importantly, many of our inquiry topics this term have been intentionally aligned with the Art Show theme, giving students a rich and integrated learning experience. Whether studying Australia’s natural environments, cultural traditions, or key historical events, students are building their knowledge base to support both their academic and creative work.

Prep

Who am I and how do stories connect us to people and place?

In this unit, students explore their personal identity and families through the theme of “Great Southern Land.” They will celebrate who they are, where they live, and learn how stories can be shared through art, drama, and dance. Inspired by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, particularly the role of dance in telling stories and connecting to Country, students will reflect on their own family, culture, and place in the world. Through creative experiences, they will express who they are, where they come from, and recognise that all families are different and special in their own way.

Year One & Two

How do our personal stories and places help shape who we are and what it means to be Australian?

In this unit, students begin by investigating their own identity, exploring the meaning of their namesfamily storieslife stages, and personal artefacts. They learn how these elements shape who they are and where they come from. Students then broaden their focus to explore Australia, investigating its unique animals, landscapes, and important landmarks that help define our national identity. Through various art forms and mediums, they will express their understanding and appreciation of Australia, culminating in a personal art piece that reflects their journey.

Year Three/Four

How can learning about Australian Land and waterways help us to understand and protect Australia’s unique environments?

In this inquiry unit, students will explore the natural wonders of Australia, with a particular focus on the Great Barrier Reef and significant Australian landscapes. They will investigate what makes these environments unique, why they are important, and the role humans play in their preservation. Students will develop an appreciation for Australia’s rich biodiversity and cultural significance. The unit will encourage students to think critically about sustainability and environmental responsibility, empowering them to take action and share ideas for protecting these national treasures for future generations.

Year Five/Six

From Earth to the Stars: What Can We Learn About Space?

In this unit, students explore Earth as part of a larger solar system, using models to investigate astronomical systems and scales.

They will learn that Earth is one of several planets and celestial bodies that orbit the Sun.

Students will examine First Nations Australians’ knowledge of the night sky and compare it with scientific understandings developed through space exploration and evidence gathering. They will also explore the technologies created to support space missions and how these innovations have advanced our understanding of space.

We are incredibly proud of the work our students are doing and can’t wait to share it with you in Term 4. Be sure to mark the date in your calendar and join us for a memorable celebration of learning, culture, and creativity.
