Reconciliation Round

Next week (Week 5) is the reconciliation round in the SACSSGSA and IGSSA competitions.

The theme for National Reconciliation Week 2026 is All In, a call for all Australians to commit wholeheartedly to reconciliation every single day. All In makes clear that reconciliation is not a spectator sport and that all of us must step away from the sidelines and take action to make change. The theme also reminds us that reconciliation and advancing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ rights isn’t a passive activity, and it is not solely the responsibility of First Nations people, who have carried the weight of championing, explaining and acting for far too long. Reconciliation will not happen by itself, and it will not happen without all of us. SACSSGSA will be recognising National Reconciliation Week throughout sporting fixtures scheduled between May 27-30, coinciding with National Reconciliation Week 2026.

For this round, students were encouraged to wear red, black, or yellow ribbons or socks in support of the Reconciliation Round. Our netball teams will wear commemorative Reconciliation bibs, and we will also acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the Land at Loreto College.

Thunderbird Sessions

Over the past two weeks our students had the opportunity to take part in some netball training sessions led by Thunderbirds players, Matilda Garrett and Lauren Frew and coach Cathy Fellows. Cathy is an experienced netball coach who has been part of various pathway programs. Her coaching background includes roles with the U21 National Team, Netball Victoria, the Collingwood Magpies, and the Victorian Institute of Sport, in addition to her current role with the Thunderbirds. This is a valuable opportunity for our students to learn from one of the sport’s top coaching minds. We are very grateful to Matilda, Lauren and Cathy for sharing their expert tips and taking the time to visit Loreto. We look forward to many more sessions throughout Terms 2 and 3.

Aerobics

We wish our talented aerobics teams all the best for their first competition on Saturday 16 May. We hope they have fun, and all their hard work is rewarded at the FISAF Super Series Competition! Good luck!

Green Machine

Well done to our Year 3 Loreto Green netball team who have made an excellent start to the winter season! The team had a great introduction to netball in the summer season just gone, working hard, having fun and improving every week, but that first win had just eluded them.

That all changed on a rainy May morning: Round 1 of the winter season. With family members huddled under umbrellas, the Green team clicked into gear. Our passing was on point, we worked into space, defended tirelessly and there were bounce passes aplenty. The introduction of full-height goal rings didn’t seem to bother us either – our shooters popped in goals from everywhere.

Afterwards we sang the song with extra gusto. The floodgates have now opened and we are two from two!

Good Golly Miss Molly

East Adelaide SAPSASA Cross Country

Well done to Tatum (4 Gold) who won the 10-year-old girls race at the East Adelaide SAPSASA Cross Country trials last week.

The event was run over hilly terrain at Foxfield Oval, Athelstone. Tatum’s race was neck-and-neck for the first half but a strong surge up the final hill gave her a narrow lead. With the finish line in sight, Tatum then flew down the hill and “won pulling away,” to use racing parlance.

Tatum was supported by Emily (5 Blue) and Georgia (5 Gold) who both competed in the 11-year-old age group. Emily came 4th while Georgia finished 12th. They were big fields, with 50+ runners in each age group and the girls can be very proud of their efforts.

Tatum and Emily have received invitations to compete in the State Championship event at Oakbank on Thursday June 4.

Matilda Garrett Coaching Sessions

Our Year 4 and Year 5 netball teams have each had a training session with Adelaide Thunderbirds star Matilda Garrett. The sessions have focused on passing with power and speed, activities to improve reflexes and ways to generate intercepts. As well as being a great coach, Matilda has been very generous with her time afterwards for photos and autographs.

Our Year 3 and Year 6 teams will get the chance to work with Matilda in Week 6.

Slam Dunkers

Our Year 4 basketballers have started the winter season with a couple of strong wins. It’s been great to see the scoring shared around. Sofia got the scoring underway on Wednesday; her jump shot did three laps around the ring before dropping. Emma scored on Wednesday after winning an offensive rebound, Ellie sunk her free throws, while Brooke scored two goals in a row. Brooke shoots right-handed but dribbles left-handed. It left dad a bit confused, but it certainly keeps her opponents guessing!

We have several new players this term and coach Vanessa has said that they’ve taken to the sport like ducks to water. Sarah and Sophie have been defending tenaciously, and their dribbling skills are improving each week. Ruby has been dominant at both ends of the courts in our two games so far.

Soccer

Our Year 5 Blue team has made a strong start to the term with a tough 4-3 win away at Scotch, followed with a dominant 5-1 victory at home to Pembroke. In Week 1, Alessia’s hattrick put us in front and then goalie Claire made a few brilliant saves in the 2nd half as we clung to our one-goal lead. In Week 2 it was pleasing to see our teamwork on display, with players using their passing skills to find players in space.

Our Year 4 Gold team also has two wins from two games. We started with a 5-0 win at home to St Aloysius then ran rampant against Pulteney. We lost count of the score at 17-0. The goal tallies have been fantastic but it’s also great to see two clean sheets in a row.

Cross Country – Wednesday Afternoon Competition

Our runners have completed two race meets for the term. We have quite a few students running competitively for their first time this winter and they have started well, pushing themselves hard on the 2km courses. Tatum finished 2nd overall in the race at Pulteney Grammar on Wednesday and everyone’s times are improving weekly.

Coach Millie put the team through a beep test on Monday morning. Everyone pushed themselves but as runners were eliminated it came down to the final three: Summer, Helen and Eleanor. In the end, it was Eleanor who hung on for the win!
