May – the Month to Celebrate Mary

In the Catholic tradition, the month of May is dedicated to Mary, the Mother of Jesus. During this special month, we are invited to reflect on Mary’s faith, courage, humility and love for God. Mary holds an important place in the life of the Church because she said “yes” to God’s call, even when it was difficult or uncertain. Her example encourages us to live with faith, kindness and compassion in our own lives.

Across schools, homes and parishes, Catholics celebrate through prayers, liturgies, rosaries, with May crowning ceremonies still practised in some areas, where flowers are placed around statues of Mary as a sign of love and respect. These traditions remind us of the important role Mary plays as a mother, guide, and role model for all people.

During May, the Church also remembers Our Lady of Fatima. This feast commemorates the appearances of Mary to three children in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917. Mary’s message at Fatima focused on prayer, peace, repentance and trust in God. Her call to pray for peace and care for others continues to remain relevant in today’s world, especially at a time when many people long for hope, healing and unity.

For the Loreto community, Mary holds a particularly special significance. Mary Ward believed strongly in following the example of the Virgin Mary through courage, faith, freedom of spirit and service to others. And indeed, the Irish branch of the Institute was called Loretto by Teresa Ball in honour of the Marian Grotto in Italy that Mary Ward loved.

As we remember Mary during the month of May, we are called not only to honour her, but also to follow her example. By showing love, faith, patience and service to others, we continue the values Mary lived every day. May is a time to pause, pray, and reflect on how we can bring hope and peace to those around us, just as Mary did.

Sacrament of Reconciliation

A group of Year 3 and 4 girls celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Tuesday 5 May in the Loreto College Chapel at 9:00am.

It was a grace-filled and joyful occasion, as seventeen girls and their families gathered in prayer and support to share in this meaningful moment.

The celebration was a beautiful reminder of God’s mercy and love, and the importance of forgiveness in our faith journey.

Following the Liturgy, the girls and their families came together for a small morning tea, providing a warm and joyful opportunity to reflect and celebrate this special milestone as a community. We thank Fr Chris Jenkins SJ and Fr Gaetan Pereira SJ for celebrating this special occasion with us.
