Year 4 News

What a full and exciting Week 2 we have had in our classroom! Students have continued to settle beautifully into routines while engaging in rich learning across all areas of the curriculum.
As writers, we began the week with a focus on reading comprehension and editing, introducing the CUPS strategy (Capital letters, Understanding, Punctuation, Spelling) to strengthen students’ written work. Students have been actively applying these skills during writing sessions and are showing growing confidence in self-correction and improving their work. We also continued our reading program, building stamina, fluency, and deeper understanding of texts.
A significant moment this week was our participation in the ANZAC Ceremony at 10:30am, where students demonstrated respect and reflection as we honoured those who have served. This linked beautifully with our ongoing learning across Religion & Inquiry.
As mathematicians, students have now completed their learning on decimals and are beginning a new focus on length and area. To start this unit, students will explore measurement in a hands-on way, using a range of tools such as rulers, tape measures and informal units to accurately measure objects in their classroom and everyday environment. This practical foundation helps students develop an understanding of precision, estimation and the importance of selecting appropriate measurement tools. As the unit progresses, students will move into calculating perimeter and area, building their understanding of how these concepts connect to real-world contexts. Through problem-solving tasks and investigations, students will strengthen their reasoning skills and apply their knowledge to measure and describe space in meaningful ways.
As inquirers, students participated in a drama incursion that brought to life a range of significant events linked to exploration. Through role-play, storytelling and interactive activities, students were able to step into different perspectives and deepen their understanding of how exploration has shaped history over time. This engaging experience provided a strong foundation for our current learning, as students now begin to explore the question “What is an explorer?” Building on the incursion, students will investigate the characteristics, motivations and challenges faced by explorers, and consider how exploration has changed across different contexts and time periods.
On Friday, we had a wonderful day of celebrations for St Fidelis Feast Day. As a faith learning community, we engaged in a whole school mass and then engaged in St Fidelis Learning throughout the day. As part of our learning about St Fidelis, students engaged in creating a shield based on the values that St Fidelis demonstrated: faith, courage, helping others and doing what’s right. Students also engaged in the St Fidelis Wall of Kindness, where they shared a value they would follow in St Fidelis’ footsteps. We then engaged in sports activities run by the Year 5/6 students. We then had a delicious lunch from the P&F.
What a wonderful day for all!
We also want to acknowledge how proud we are of the class for their positive attitude, especially during busy days with transitions between specialist subjects and whole-school events. Thank you for your ongoing support at home – it makes such a difference in helping students feel confident and prepared each day.
