Year 3 News

We’ve had a busy, event filled week in Year 3! We started off the week with a solemn Anzac Day ceremony to commemorate our Anzac soldiers and all who have served our country. We were also honoured to have Scott Smith, a navy veteran, visit our school as a special guest. He made a short speech and happily answered students’ questions. Well done 3BP for doing an amazing job hosting this event!
Inquiry Incursion
As inquirers, Year 3 students enthusiastically participated in the Terra Australis Oi Oi Oi incursion, where they explored key moments from Australia’s past in an engaging and memorable way. Through lively dramatisation, students were introduced to significant historical periods including the First Fleet, the Gold Rush era, the Eureka Stockade, the expedition of Wills and Burke, and the story of the Ned Kelly gang. The interactive performance brought history to life, helping students deepen their understanding of these events while fostering curiosity and enjoyment in learning about Australia’s rich heritage.
Literacy
As readers, we have begun a picture book study on the narrative non-fiction book, ‘Finding Our Heart: A Story about the Uluru Statement for Young Australians’ by Thomas Mayor. As writers, we are learning to construct a summarising sentence about the story, that includes the who, what, where when and why.
Below are some examples of summarising sentences from students:
The Uluru statement is about the Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander people who came together near the red rock in 2017 to express their emotions. They wanted their voices to be heard and their traditions to be respected. (Henry)
The Uluru Statement is about the Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander people getting heard and coming together with Australians to be treated with the care and respect that they deserve. (Mia)
The Uluru Statement is about the Indigenous people and Torres Strait Islander people who came together in 2017 to express their need to have their voices heard and their traditions respected by all Australians. (Edan)
The Uluru Statement is a very important Statement to the Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders. It is crucial for them to follow their traditions and come together. (Ella)
Maths
As mathematicians, we concluded our topic on Fractions by participating in a hands-on activity where students had to create a museum of exhibits that represent fractions. Students used a variety of materials including connector cubes, counters and rods to show how parts make a whole. This interactive approach enabled students to visualise, build and explain their thinking through creativity and collaboration.
St Fidelis Celebrations
As a faith community, we began our St Fidelis feast day celebrations on Friday with a morning liturgy honouring St Fidelis’ unwavering faith, courage and compassion. In class, we completed a St Fidelis shield which involved writing and drawing about how we could show courage, compassion and faith in our own lives. Later on, a whole school tabloid sporting event was held, led by the year 5 and 6 students. Mixed level teams participated with energetic enthusiasm, and good fun was had by all.
This week our learning will include:
- Numeracy: Introducing Length
- Literacy: Finding Our Heart book study
- Writing: Constructing detailed summarising sentences
- Spelling: The prefix ‘un’ meaning ‘not’ or ‘opposite’.
- Inquiry: Éxploration: How did it Shape Australia?
- Religion: The Road to Emmaus scripture story
- Stem Bottle Rockets Incursion: Monday 4th May
Wishing everyone a wonderful week ahead.
