Celebrating Reading

There are two reading initiatives available for students that encourage a love of reading and support regular reading habits in different ways.

Both are optional, great ways to encourage students to read more, explore different books, and enjoy reading at school and at home.

Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge

I’m excited to announce that our school is participating in the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge (VPRC) this year. This is a free program that encourages students to read more and, most importantly, enjoy reading.

The Challenge is completely optional and it is not a competition. It is about each student working towards their own reading goal at their own pace.

Students in Prep to Year 6 are encouraged to read 15 books across the year. These can include a mix of books from the official Challenge list as well as books they already enjoy at home.

The Challenge runs throughout the year and usually finishes in September. Students who complete it will receive a certificate signed by the Premier.

Scholastic Reading Month – 30 Year Celebration

May is Scholastic’s National Family Reading Month, which encourages families to read together regularly. Reading together helps children build strong reading habits and supports their success at school. We know how important this is, but we also understand that busy family life and screen time can make it hard to fit in.

This year marks 30 years of Scholastic Reading Month. It is a program that helps children enjoy reading and develop a lifelong love of books. Students are encouraged to read often, explore different kinds of texts, and build good reading habits both at school and at home.

This month is all about encouraging students to read widely and regularly, choose books they enjoy, and build positive reading habits. It is a celebration of reading at school, at home, and everywhere in between.

Registration (optional) - NFRM Home | Scholastic Australia

Students can choose to complete the Scholastic Reading Challenge in place of, or as well as, the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, depending on their preference.

Both programs share the same goal. Supporting students to read more, enjoy books, and develop a lifelong love of reading.

With support from home and school, we aim to make reading enjoyable and rewarding for every student and celebrate their achievements throughout either Initiative.

Library borrowing

St Fidelis is fortunate to have a well resourced library that offers students a wide range of engaging books to support their learning and enjoyment of reading. Borrowing library books is a privilege that allows all students to access these resources.

There has been an increase in books being returned damaged or not returned. Please remind your child of the privilege and responsibility that comes with borrowing library books. Students are expected to take care of borrowed books so they can continue to be enjoyed by others.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
