Core Literacy

In Grade 1, students have been revising their Level 5 codes and applying this knowledge during spelling activities. They are becoming increasingly confident with the classroom routines and expectations, consistently checking and reflecting on their spelling. Students are also continuing to build their reading fluency by practising in pairs, listening carefully to one another read, and developing their ability to read smoothly in phrases.

In Grade 2, it has been so exciting as the students are now moving into the final level of the Decodable Readers Australia program. We have been revising our Level 7 sounds and are now progressing to Level 8 sounds, including aw, ew, and ou. We have been practising our spelling and focusing on neat, careful handwriting to help us become more confident writers.

We have also been developing our reading fluency and expression through Reader’s Theatre activities. During these sessions, students work in small groups of three to practise reading scripts aloud with clear voices, expression, and confidence. Reader’s Theatre helps students build their fluency by encouraging them to read smoothly and pay attention to punctuation and character emotions. Students have loved rehearsing together, and some groups have even had the opportunity to perform their scripts for the class to showcase their reading skills.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, we have been exploring the concept of measurement, with a particular focus on length and mass. The students have been learning how to measure using informal units such as hands, feet, and popsicle sticks, helping them understand that measurement is all about comparing the size of objects in different ways. We have also been learning about mass by comparing and ordering objects based on how heavy or light they are, and discussing the different ways we can describe and measure weight.

To bring our learning to life, we headed down to the oval for an exciting long jump investigation. The students took turns completing standing jumps and then worked with a partner to measure their distances using footsteps and icy pole sticks. There was lots of enthusiasm and teamwork as we recorded and compared our results.

Through this hands-on experience, the students discovered that using feet as a measurement isn’t always accurate, since everyone has different-sized feet. This led to some great discussions about fairness in measurement and why using consistent, standard units helps us compare results more reliably. It was a fun and practical way to deepen our understanding of how measurement works in the real world.

Mother's Day

For Mother’s Day, students thought about special ways to thank and show appreciation to their mums, grandmothers, and other important female carers for all the love, care, and support they give each day. They began by reflecting on what they wanted to say, brainstorming their ideas and choosing kind and thoughtful messages to share.

Students then wrote a neat final copy of their message and placed it inside a beautifully decorated card. They took care with their handwriting and presentation to make their message extra special.

To go along with their cards, students also created a beaded keyring, carefully threading colourful beads and adding a photo of themselves at the end. The finished gifts were a lovely keepsake for families to enjoy, and students were proud to create something meaningful to say thank you for everything their mums and other special carers do for them.
