Year 9 Maths Takes Flight with the Box Kite Project
During Term 2, Year 9 Mathematics students at Reservoir High School participated in an exciting five-week Box Kite Project as part of their CAT (Common Assessment Task). The project will continue, due to its outstanding success and strong student engagement.

The Box Kite Project combined hands-on learning with important mathematical concepts, including measurement, geometry, scale drawing, Pythagoras’ Theorem, trigonometry and problem-solving. From 2025 students worked through the entire process, from planning and calculating dimensions to constructing and testing their own box kites.
Throughout the project, students demonstrated creativity, teamwork and persistence. Many students enjoyed seeing how mathematics could be applied in a practical and meaningful way, beyond the classroom. By building a real object from last year and continuing into 2026, students were able to connect mathematical theories to everyday applications and engineering principles.
One of the highlights of the project this year was the kite-flying session, held during half of period 5. Students gathered outside to test their kites and celebrate the completion of their work. The atmosphere was full of excitement, laughter and friendly competition, as students watched their creations lift into the sky. The activity not only rewarded students for their hard work, but also reinforced the idea that learning mathematics can be active, enjoyable and memorable.
The success of the Box Kite Project reflects Reservoir High School’s commitment to engaging students through innovative and practical learning experiences. The project has become an excellent example of “making actions to maths learning” by transforming mathematical knowledge into a fun and authentic experience.
We look forward to seeing next year’s Year 9 students continue this wonderful tradition from 2025.
