Year 2

Mont De Lancey Historic Homestead Excursion
Our Year 2 students had a wonderful time visiting Mont De Lancey Historic Homestead in Wandin North as part of our “Olden Days” learning theme – 2BH and 2RO on Tuesday 19 May and 2L and 2LB on Friday 22 May. Throughout the day, students explored the museum, visited the chapel where they had the exciting opportunity to ring the bell, and stepped inside an old-fashioned home and kitchen to see what life was like many years ago. They also experienced what school was like in the past by sitting in a traditional classroom and drawing on slates using chalk.
Students enjoyed learning about old machinery and were fascinated by demonstrations from the wood maker and blacksmith. During break times, everyone had great fun playing traditional games from the olden days including billy carts, tug of war, sack races, hula hoops, and bean bag throwing.
Here are some of the children’s reflections from the day:
Aadya, 2RO – I enjoyed the school because it was challenging to write with my right hand, since in the olden days everyone was forced to write with their right hand and I am left-handed.
Rubin, 2RO – I loved playing the games, the bean bag toss in particular because my friends and I were challenging each other to see who got the most points.
Chloe, 2L – I liked the classroom because it was pretty fun writing on slate and reading out the alphabet.
Harry, 2L – I liked the billy cart because it was so much fun and we turned it into a race with my other friends.
Amelia, 2LB – I enjoyed spending time with my mum at Mont De Lancey because she came along as a parent helper.
Ethan, 2LB – I enjoyed looking at the blacksmith and how he turned metal by heating it up to 900 degrees and turning it into a twisty metal.
Harvey, 2BH – I liked the billy cart because you get to race in them with my friends.
Hailey, 2BH – The games were the most exciting part of my excursion, especially the billy cart.
The excursion was a fantastic hands-on learning experience, giving students the opportunity to step back in time and gain a deeper understanding of what life was like in the olden days.
Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands excursion: Caring for Earth's Water – a Wetlands Adventure
To support our ‘Water Cycle’ Integrated Studies Unit next term, our Year 2 students will be attending the Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands on:
- Tuesday 16 June (2L & 2LB) and
- Thursday 18 June (2BH & 2RO); please note the change of date.
Students will explore the wetlands and participate in hands-on learning experiences focused on living things, habitats and the importance of water in our environment.
This excursion will provide a wonderful introduction to our Term 3 inquiry theme on the water cycle, helping students build an understanding of how water moves through our world and why it is such an important resource for all living things.
The Compass event notices have been published. Consent and payment are due now and not later than Friday 12 June.
