Education in Faith

Sixth Sunday of Easter - Year A

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus speaks tenderly to His disciples, knowing He will soon leave them. He says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” This is not said as a demand, but as an invitation into a relationship built on love. Jesus reassures them that they will not be left alone. He promises the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, who will guide, comfort, and remain with them always.

This promise connects beautifully with the First Reading, where the Holy Spirit comes upon the people through the laying on of hands. We see the early Church growing not just as an organisation, but as a living system led by the Spirit, full of joy and unity.

The Responsorial Psalm echoes this joy: “Let all the earth cry out to God with joy.” It reminds us that faith is not meant to be hidden, it is something to be lived, celebrated, and shared with others.

Together, these readings reveal a powerful message: we are never alone. God is present within us through the Holy Spirit, helping us to live out Jesus’ commandment of love in our everyday actions. The Church itself becomes a system of love, each person playing a role, guided by the Spirit, working together to bring God’s presence into the world.

This challenges us to think: If we truly love Jesus, how do we show it? Not just in words, but in the way we treat others with kindness, respect, forgiveness, and care.“If you love me, you will keep my commandments”?

Discussion Starters

  • What does Jesus mean when He says, Who is the Holy Spirit, and how does the Spirit help us in our daily lives?
  • How do we see the Holy Spirit at work in the First Reading?
  • What does it mean that we are “not left alone”?
  • How can we show love for Jesus through our actions at school, home, or in our community?
  • In what ways are we part of a “system” like the Church, where everyone has a role?
  • How can we bring joy to others, as the Psalm invites us to do?
