St Brigid's News and Events
News from STEM
In STEM this term, we have been using our brand new Lego Spike Essential kits. A very big thank you to the Social Squad for fundraising so that we can further our learning of coding and engineering in STEM! We really appreciate it!
In Year 5/6, the unit that we are completing is called ‘Science We Cannot See’ and is linked with Physical Science and Earth and Space Science. We are exploring evidence that matter is made of particles too small to see. We are learning about gravitational forces on Earth, investigating how the number of daylight hours varies during the year and exploring ways to use science ideas to protect Earth’s environment.
In Year 3/4, the unit that we are completing is called ‘Animals and Their Environments’ and is linked with Earth and Space Science as well as Life Science.
We have already designed a structure that will keep a pet safe in stormy weather. Last week, we explored animal life cycles and this week we are focussing on animal group behaviour. In the last few weeks, we will further explore habitats and then move on to a free build using our knowledge of Lego engineering and coding!
In Year 1/2, the unit that we are completing is called ‘Science in Nature and Our Daily Life’ and is linked with Physical Science, Life Science and Earth and Space Science. We are exploring the diversity of animals and plants in different habitats. Today, we developed models that mimic the function of an animal in pollinating plants and dispersing seeds. Over the next couple of weeks we are going to examine and classify materials by the observable properties suited to building an animal shelter. Also we will design a solution to slow or prevent wind from changing the shape of the land that animals use at their park as well as including coding in all of these builds!

Evergreen Christmas Trees -
A big thank you to Evergreen Christmas Trees for once again donating the most magnificent Christmas Tree to St Brigid's. We love it even though it does give Mrs Sullivan terrible hayfever!! Our classes have started making decorations for the tree and our visiting Kinder Students from Mordialloc Preschool even made some decorations during there visit with us this week. We are sure we will have the best dressed tree in Mordialloc very soon!
Evergreen Christmas Trees don't have quite as many trees as last year so the advice is get in quick. Don't forget to tell Louis and his wonderful team that you come from St Brigid's, as 10% of all sales will also be donated back to our School. Any St Brigid's families who buy a tree will also go into the draw for a free Christmas Tree next year.
