Year 5/6 Cluster News

HOME INQUIRY:

Reading: Aim for 20 minutes minimum reading per night. As students complete a book, they are to record the author, title and date of finishing in their Reader’s Workshop book. We encourage students to read aloud, either to themselves or a parent.

Mathematics: Continue working on general multiplication skills and number facts.

Year 5 Leadership positions:

Students have begun the journey of leadership applications. This is a long process that involves letter writing, interviews, speeches and voting. Please be patient as School Captain positions get allocated first, then Sports Captains, then all other positions of responsibility.

Applicants for School Captain will have an interview on Tuesday morning with Mr Wallace, Mrs Zadow and Mr Napier. Successful applicants will move onto speeches later in the week.

Current and Upcoming Learning

Christian Studies:

Students have begun their unit on, ‘Christians have a responsibility in and for the world’. This unit is about how we have the responsibility to be stewards (caretakers) of the world that God has created. Students have started their stop motion videos to represent and retell Bible stories that connect with their issues. Students have been asked to bring in props to begin the filming process.

Unit Of Inquiry:

The students are once again back in their home classes. We have begun a science inquiry that has the central idea, ‘Science helps us to understand the world’. Student have been doing science experiments this week to make connections with an area of science.

Literacy:

Students will be using this time to enjoy engaging with books and looking at characterisation. During Writer’s Workshop, we will continue writing for the purpose of scientific investigations.

Mathematics:

The students have been looking at algebraic thinking and how patterns can be written as number sentences. We will also be looking at BEDMAS, which is an acronym to remember the order of operations. (Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition and Subtraction)
