Breaking News- Economists Save the Planet!

Year 11 representatives of every region of the world met ahead of the United Nations Conference of Parties 29 (COP29) Climate Change Summit. Budding Economists discussed means of reaching ambitious Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions reductions targets for each of their countries, and ministries they represented.

 

Pierre Alla Munnikihaafata, Farming Minister for Kenya, discovered that “a lot of countries are preparing to fight against Co2 emissions”. Hamish Leahy, Environment Minister for Iceland, “learnt about the different economic measures, such as the Emissions Trading Scheme, which typically have very interesting and varied approaches to dealing with greenhouse gas emissions.”

 

Josh Smith, Business, Industry and Development Minister for Oman, learned that “Moving towards only using renewable energy sounds easy but is a very complex issue.”

 

Jakob Sekker, Minister for Development for South Sudan, learned “how wealthier countries are giving money to poorer countries to help combat climate change”. Finn Malcolm, Business, Industry, Food and Unions Minister for Oceania, “learnt about the environmental issues that Tuvalu is facing and how it'll affect the economy”.

 

Ashleigh Emerson, Research Minister for Ghana, reflected that she “learnt about intergenerational equity and making sure we move to more sustainable and greener options so that future generations would have enough resources”.

 

Kaylan Riha-Jones, Business and Industry Minister for Sweden, said overall he “enjoyed the Model UN COP 29 Forum as I had fun making a group with my friends and making a speech with them”. Sina Darabi, Business and Industry Minister for China, agreed that “it was really interesting to pretend being government leaders and looking at our own nations and quite a nice experience”.
