A positive school transition.

To help children transition positively to school, we’ve implemented several experiences, helping them to familiarise with the new environment and ease any anxieties.

We have been taking the children on visits to a nearby primary school, where they can explore the playground and visit the library. These visits allow children to experience the atmosphere of a school and build confidence in navigating the new space. By meeting “big kids” during these visits, they get a sense of what school life is like, and it makes the idea of going to school feel more exciting.

We also introduce the children to the specific school they will be attending. This includes showing them photos of the school buildings, classrooms, and playgrounds. Visual aids like these are helpful as they create a sense of familiarity and allow children to visualise where they will soon be spending their days. We sometimes integrate these photos into group discussions, encouraging the children to share any thoughts, questions, or feelings they have about starting school.

Additionally, we engage the children in discussions about what to expect at school, such as classroom activities, lunchtime routines, and how they can ask for help if they need it. We emphasise positive aspects of school life, like making new friends, learning new things, and the fun of outdoor play. This helps them approach school with curiosity and confidence.

Together, these experiences aim to make the school environment feel welcoming and approachable, setting children up for a smooth and positive transition.
