Supporting children's transitions to school

By Glen Chelsea Educational Team

In our program, at Glen Chelsea Kindergarten, we are dedicated to supporting children's transitions to school by implementing a variety of literacy and numeracy-focused activities designed to enhance their communication, language and counting, problem solving skills.

Recognising that literacy serves as a foundation for successful learning, we strive to create engaging environments where children can explore captivating stories, actively participate in group discussions, and engage in a variety of reading and writing readiness activities. For instance, our storytelling sessions not only ignite children’s imaginations but also encourage them to articulate their thoughts and ideas, fostering their confidence in communication and problem solving, which are an essential component for a positive transition to school.

Moreover, we have infused playful literacy activities into our curriculum that promote letter recognition and phonemic awareness through interactive games. These engaging experiences allow children to learn naturally through play, as they manipulate letters. By fostering these skills, we are not only enhancing their literacy abilities but also cultivating resilience and problem-solving skills.

Our commitment to creating a supportive and stimulating literacy environment ensures that children are well-equipped to meet the communication challenges they will encounter in school, reinforcing the understanding that successful transitions are rooted in a holistic approach to learning.

In addition to literacy, we place great emphasis on supporting children’s social development during this critical transition. We have introduced a variety of activities that promote collaboration, empathy, and effective communication among peers. Through group tasks and cooperative games, children are encouraged to work together, negotiate roles, and resolve conflicts, which in turn enhances their social skills and fosters a strong sense of community. These interactions not only help children build friendships and share ideas but also allow them to appreciate the diverse perspectives of their peers, which are skills that are crucial for adapting to the more structured environment of school.

Family engagement is another vital aspect of our transition support. We recognise the significant role that families play in preparing their children for school, and we prioritise open communication and collaboration with parents.

Through regular workshops, family events, and informative newsletters, we keep families informed about our programs and the skills being developed with their children. We actively encourage parents to share their experiences and insights, fostering a collaborative partnership that emphasis the importance of learning both at home and in the early childhood setting.

By involving families in the transition process, we provide children with consistent support that boost their confidence and readiness as they embark on their educational journey.
