"Reading is Magic"
Book Week 2024
"The library is not just full of books, but also opportunities."
Abbey 2016
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many library helpers this year. From book coverers to book shelvers, all have played a major role in ensuring the library works like a well-oiled machine catering to the many needs of our diverse student population, keeping it in tip-top shape.
Well done to the Yr 6 students for receiving a participant certificate this week.
A huge CONGRATULATIONS to the Yr 6 recipients of a Platinum certificate.
This award signifies 7 years of commitment to reading. I could not be more proud of this group of students.
This achievement shines a light on how highly reading for pleasure is valued by the students of St Nicholas School. It is also pleasing to see the numbers in this area growing.
The Importance of Building A Reading Culture.
*Stories Connect Us - Feed our Imagination AND Sustain our Sense of Belonging
CBCA - Wendy Rapee, Kayte Eyre
A reading culture (or sub-culture) we can define as a culture that holds reading central across attitudes, where we value reading.
At St Nicholas School we are working towards developing a positive reading culture in all our students.
Young people cannot be what they cannot see. They will become lovers of reading through interaction, observation and imitation. We need to let our students see us reading and value reading by making time for it both in the classroom setting and in the home.
The desire to read, the will to read for pleasure, only happens after confidence and the joys of reading are experienced and valued. Within our guided reading sessions each day the students are given ample opportunity to learn how to read and to increase their confidence in their ability to read. When the students visit the library they are then free to choose what they would like to read armed with this knowledge and confidence.
The role of the CBCA within a reading culture is to pass along, transmit stories and the joy of reading through book week, the book week awards and enriching the lives of young people through stories. Which is why book week plays such an important role in the reading life of the school.
This week many students were issued an overdue notice. Please assist your child/children to locate and return these books.
Next week the library will be closed to borrowing due to stocktake, however students will still have access to the cool, calm and comfortable front area to play games, colour, draw and play chess.
The following week, the last week of school, will allow students to borrow for the Christmas holiday period.
LIBRARY BAGS>>> NEW BOOKS
New books are arriving all the time. Please ensure your child has a library bag so they can enjoy these reads at their leisure at home in the holidays.
The timetable is being formulated this week.
Book Busters will resume in 2025.
BOOK BUSTERS CLUB is an optional early morning reading club for students who wish to come into the cool or warm library before school to read.
"The strongest positive impact on reading engagement and learning gains comes from student self-selection of reading materials. When reading materials are selected for students the links to engagement and learning gain decline significantly."

When students visit the library a huge emphasis is placed on the
premise that they have
CHOICE
in what they can read and borrow.
In the library we are safe online and respectful of each other and the technology.
Please follow the steps:
MONDAY - THURSDAY | Cool maths games, coding - scratch, worldbookonline, Google classroom - class work SORA, World Book ebooks. |
FRIDAY | Tech Free Friday Library OPEN |
If you would like to access another site, please ask Mrs McGuirk first.
Please note a LIBRARY BAG is the first item on your child's equipment list for this year.
Thank you for ensuring your child has a library bag. I have some spares and will issue these to students next week who have not yet presented with a bag.
LIBRARY BAGS MATTER... Not just some of the time but all of the time.
No food or drink on my books.
Food and drink are for the chooks.
Library bags keep ‘em clean.
Books are cool don’t treat ‘em mean.
Bring your bag every time.
Fill it up and get in line.
Have it scanned and scoot on out.
LIBRARY BAGS
We all shout.
