2024 Barwon Junior Debating Competition -Grand Final!!=
On Wednesday 13th of November, our Chilwell debaters hosted Fyans Park for the Barwon Junior Debating Competition Grand Final, with Chilwell A versing Fyans Park A. The topic was that social media should be banned for people under 16 years. There was a coin toss, with Chilwell A arguing for the affirmative and Fyans Park A arguing for the negative. The debaters were only told the topic as they went into their preparation rooms, and then had half an hour on their own to prepare for the debate, with no help from computers, iPads or teachers. The debate was closely contested, and there was plenty of discussion and rebuttal about government, influencers, exercise and online bullying, but in the end, Chilwell A took the win by a decisive 2 points. It was a very fun, high-quality debate with the afternoon tea, people and impressive silverware at the end!
Each grand final debater received a medal, with both teams receiving a trophy. Caitlin was awarded best speaker of the grand final. There was also another trophy for receiving three or more best speaker awards throughout the competition, and do you know what, Caitlin got that one, too! Even though Team B wasn’t debating in the grand final, their support was amazing. Team A really appreciated how Team B came along to cheer them on the whole way.
Well done to our Chilwell Grand Champions. This was Chilwell’s third debating grand final win in a row, so we clearly have some talented and persuasive students at our school! Thank you to Mrs Stephenson and Mr Cole for their coaching all year, and to all of the teachers and parents who came along to support our debaters last Wednesday.
