Keeping Active Indoors This Winter

As the colder weather settles in, it can be tempting to spend more time sitting inside. However, staying active during winter is important for children's physical health, emotional wellbeing, concentration, and learning. Research shows that regular movement helps children maintain energy levels, improve mood, and support healthy development.

The good news is that you don't need sunshine or a sports field to keep moving! Here are some fun and easy ways to stay active indoors:

  • Create an obstacle course using cushions, chairs, and blankets.
  • Have a family dance party and let everyone choose their favourite song.
  • Play active games such as indoor scavenger hunts, charades, or hopscotch made with masking tape.
  • Try a movement challenge such as star jumps, balancing on one foot, or animal walks around the house.
  • Build a cubby or fort, encouraging children to move, lift, crawl, and create.
  • Take movement breaks during homework or screen time with a quick stretch, dance, or fitness challenge.

Let's embrace the winter months by finding creative ways to keep our bodies moving and our minds active!
