Grade Five

Our students have had a terrific start to their final term in Grade 5!🙂 After our swimming sessions and World Expo in the last weeks of Term 3, we have all come back recharged and ready to give our best to this term.

Term 4 English has a focus on report and persuasive writing, culminating in our students preparing for and writing speeches as a part of the Leadership process. Spelling continues to be an integral part of our Literacy, where students use the SMART Spelling process to gain a greater understanding of how words work. Throughout the term, our students will practice their public speaking skills, writing short pieces and presenting them to their class. We will continue to challenge our students’ thinking, encouraging them to question what they read in order to understand, develop and build on their literacy skills through their Literature Circle group discussions.

Our focus for Maths this term is to continue to improve our students’ understanding and application of the Four Operations (Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division), applying these to our Maths warm up games and all units of work. Our Fete unit of work will bring together financial Maths, as well as location and mapping, and units of measurement. Students will continue to develop and enhance their problem solving skills while working on open-ended and specific problem solving questions.

Our Term 4 Integrated unit is Creativity which focus's on inventions, both global and Australian. Students will work collaboratively to research, design and advertise a product to be presented to their class Shark Tank panel. Through our unit on Leadership, students will explore and discuss the qualities leaders must have, along with the actions that lead them to success. It is important to recognise these qualities in light of our students heading into their final term as Grade 5 students and the year that lies ahead for them as Grade 6 students and school leaders.

We continue to be incredibly thankful for the important skills our students continue to learn and develop during Specialist activities; the effort our amazing Specialist Team put into each lesson helps provide a well rounded curriculum for all students at Oatlands Primary School.

As a Team, we are looking forward to what lies ahead for the remainder of Term 4 and seeing our students grow into the outstanding Senior School Leaders that we know they will be.
