From the Head of Boarding

As we finish up another exciting school term at Great Southern Grammar, it's a perfect time to pause and reflect on the incredible individuals who make your child’s boarding experience possible—the dedicated and compassionate staff who support boarding. Their unwavering commitment to creating a nurturing and supportive home away from home for your child deserves our appreciation.

Our staff members who support our boarding operation are the unsung heroes of our community. They work tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure your child receives the care, support, and guidance they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. It's not just a job for them; it's a uniquely dedicated commitment and huge responsibility when providing a home away from home for your child.

Let's take a moment to acknowledge the incredible roles they play in our lives:

  • Mentorship and Guidance: Our boarding staff members serve as mentors and role models to your child. They provide the guidance and support necessary for personal growth, helping them navigate the challenges of adolescence and make sound decisions.
  • Safety and Security: The safety and well-being of our children are paramount. The boarding staff ensures that your child is safe and secure, both physically and emotionally. Their round-the-clock presence gives you peace of mind.
  • Academic Support: Beyond their caring roles, many staff members also contribute to our children's academic success by offering study sessions, homework help in the form of prep, and a conducive learning environment within the boarding houses.
  • Creating a Sense of Community: Boarding staff foster a sense of belonging by organising events, celebrations, and communal activities that help our children build friendships and create cherished memories.
  • Emotional Support: They are there to lend a listening ear when your child needs someone to talk to or offer a comforting presence during difficult times.
  • Organising Life Skills: From teaching essential life skills to promoting independence, the staff supporting boarding play a pivotal role in preparing your child for life beyond school.

I feel as we are now three quarters of the way through our year, it's a great time to pause and reflect on acknowledging the importance to express our gratitude and appreciation towards these remarkable individuals who dedicate their lives to your child's well-being.

Here are some ways I think we can show our appreciation:

  • Write a personal note: A heartfelt note expressing your gratitude can go a long way in making a staff member's day.
  • Small gestures: A simple thank-you card of appreciation can show how much you value their hard work.
  • Attend boarding events: Participate in our Boarding Muster or events throughout the year. When dropping off your child, make to time to say Hi to boarding staff on duty to get to know our staff better and build a connection for our staff of family to child.
  • Share positive feedback: If a staff member has made a significant impact on your child's life, don't hesitate to share your positive feedback with school administrators.
  • Volunteer your time: Offer your assistance or resources to support boarding house initiatives and activities.

Our boarding staff members are not just employees but an integral part of our extended family. Their dedication and care for our children help create a warm and welcoming environment that allows our boarders to thrive.

Let's make a conscious effort to show our appreciation and gratitude for their hard work and unwavering commitment to your child’s well-being. Together, we can make our boarding community even stronger and more supportive.

So as Head of Boarding, on behalf of our community, I say thank you to our remarkable staff who support our boarding community. I am sure you will join me in showing how truly grateful for your dedication and the positive impact you have on our boarders' lives when we next meet.

Have a wonderful break, stay safe and I look forward to seeing you all back for our last term where we focus will be on farewelling our Year Twelve leavers.
