Congratulations to Katie from Yr 5 Bandicoots on having recently been awarded the highest Cub Scout Honour, The Grey Wolf Award. The Grey Wolf Award is the highest and most prestigious award received by Cubs, after completing several outcomes including leadership challenges and activities, achieving competency in a range of bushcraft, camping and bushwalking skills, completing six special interest projects, and the planning and leading of a four-hour hike.

Katie’s journey as a Cub-Scout included achieving the 200km hiking badge and completing 13 special interest projects that addressed a range of the United Nations sustainable development goals such as reducing hunger and poverty, climate action, promoting good health and well-being, partnerships, and life on land.

As part of Katie’s projects, she walked 50 kms to raise $1,476 for the Starlight Children’s Foundation, and cycled 248kms to raise $1,523 for Camp Quality to support national programs and services for sick kids and their families. Katie organised food-drive and food preparation activities at the Scout-Hall to support Midland Meals, and she raised $110 towards the purchase of backpack beds for the homeless in our local community.

This year, Katie was elected Unit Leader and has been a member of the Unit Council where she has contributed to the planning of camps, youth projects and organising activities for youth members. In February, Katie was a finalist in the WA Scout of the Year Awards in recognition of her ongoing contribution to conservation and her activities to support one of Australia’s most critically endangered reptiles, the Western Swamp Tortoise.

The Grey Wolf Award is the pinnacle of Cub Scout achievements. It is a nationally recognised Award that takes approximately 1-3 years to achieve. Congratulations Katie.
