A Spotlight on Learning

A Spotlight on Learning in the JLC on Heights Campus

How time flies! It is hard to believe we are already in the last week of Term 3.

Our JLC students had a really busy term filled with new experiences and learning. The students went on an excursion a number of weeks ago to the Royal Botanical Gardens in Cranbourne and learnt how plants adapt to the Australian environment, discovering how they interact with other living things in the ecosystem. Just this week, students attended ‘The 169-Storey Treehouse Launch with Andy Griffiths’ online event organised by the State Library of Victoria. They were inspired by the author as he shared all the nutty details of the new levels in his new book.

In Reading, students have been learning to determine what is important in a text so that they can summarise. They located key words and recorded key facts they found in their non-fiction book to help them with their summary. Students have also been developing their skills in writing information reports. They have organised their ideas in their plan and included relevant vocabulary in their sentences as they write to inform others about different animals.

In Mathematics, students have been learning about the connection between addition and subtraction. They have been practising their addition facts and using the facts they know to help them solve subtraction problems.

During Social and Emotional Learning, students learnt various self-calming strategies to manage themselves when they are feeling stressed. A few of the students’ preferred strategies were taking deep breaths, listening to quiet music and drawing.

We are so proud of how much our JLC students have achieved and are looking forward to seeing them work towards their goals next term. Have a safe, fun and restful holidays, and see you all back in Term 4!
