Welcome to the College Library!

NEW SCHOLASTIC BOOK CLUB

The latest issue of the Scholastic Book Club is out! If you are wishing to put in an order, please make sure you have it in by today Friday 20 October.   If you have any questions regarding anything ‘book club’, The library is more than happy to assist you.

SELECTING A ‘JUST RIGHT BOOK’

As the library welcomes new generations of young readers, it is important to ensure students are borrowing ‘just right books’ during this time. The ideal book should be at a level that a student can decode and comprehend, develop their vocabulary, but most of all be interesting and fun.  Here are a few tips to know and help remind them when they’re picking their next book:

  1. Look at the cover and the title – is it a new book to me?
  2. Read the blurb – is it interesting?
  3. Scan the amount of text / check the number of pages (helps identify length and difficulty level)
  4. Pick a random page and read it out loud.
  5. Identify any unknown words from that page - if its more than 4 its too hard and if it’s under 2 it’s too easy.
  6. Retell the story or facts to check comprehension.

THE LIBRARY GENRE SYSTEM

While our college library follows the Dewey System, we have also chosen to implement a genre category system throughout. This option provides staff and students with an additional way to browse and locate books. This process meant the library staff would go through each book resource within the library and categorise it into a set genre.

Over the last year, this extensive process has been underway and going on behind the scenes, on top of usual library services. Staff and students can now enjoy another level of borrowing, with an additional way of locating and selecting new books.

EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST - LIBRARY MONITORS

We are excited to announce a new opportunity to get involved in our school library. The library team is opening up early expressions of interest for some library monitors. This is a great chance to develop leadership skills, gain valuable work experience, and contribute to the school community.

As a library monitor, you will play an important role in ensuring the library runs smoothly and efficiently. Your responsibilities may include shelving books, assisting other students with finding materials, organising displays, and helping to maintain a quiet and orderly environment.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please pay a visit to the library and speak to the friendly staff. This is open to students from Grades 3-10, we will be taking expressions of interest all term.

We look forward to hearing from you and working together to make our school library the best it can be.

Many thanks, The Library Team: Jen, Karen, Meg.
