Writing

CURRICULUM FOCUS

Foundation students are beginning to learn about persuasive texts.

Persuasive texts are a form of non-fiction writing that aims to persuade readers and audiences to think a certain way about a given topic.

Writers form an opinion and write a reason to justify this opinion.

  • Cats are better than dogs.
  • Vegetables are better than ice cream.
  • Playground is better than the sandpit.
  • Summer is better than winter.

VOCABULARY

Opinion: a view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.

Reason: a cause, explanation, or justification for an action or event.

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Ask your child to write a persuasive text giving reasons for where the family should go for the next holiday, or what meals should be on the menu for the next week.

Remind them that they need to justify their answers and give two or three reasons why they are thinking this way.

Example; “I think we should go to _____ on our holidays because there’s lots of fun things to do…______”

“I think we should eat ice cream for dinner because ______”
