WHAT’S HAPPENING IN YEAR 2

Term 4 Weeks 5 & 6

LITERACY:

Reading - When reading, we are focusing on predicting within texts and working on our comprehension of written text. We are conducting some formal assessment with students over the next few weeks to assist with report writing.

Writing - We are looking at all aspects of persuasive writing this term. In weeks 5 & 6 we will be continuing to work on persuasive writing, including our reasons why we support an idea. We will also focus on capital letters at the start of a sentence and for names of people and places as well as punctuation including full stops, commas and exclamation marks.

Spelling - To read, write and spell words with the est (cutest)and o(front)  grapheme (sound)  is our focus.

MATHS: We are looking at patterns over the next few weeks including odd and even numbers and missing elements. We are also looking at transformation including investigating the effect of one-step slides and flips with and without digital technologies as well as identify and describe half and quarter turns.

INQUIRY: This term we are exploring digital technology. Throughout the term students will identify how common digital systems are used to meet specific purposes. They will also create and organise ideas and information using information systems and share these in safe online environments.

HOMEWORK: Homework expectations are that students are completing home reading (at least every school night) and filling out their reading diary. Remember each student is aiming to get 200 nights of reading across the year to get a ticket to the Pizza Party at the end of this term! A reminder that your child also has a log in to mathseeds which they can access from home should they wish.

Our Mascots

Our Mascots are heading to your homes again during term 4. Bessy is going home with the children in 2MD and Bob is going home with the children in 2W. They will come home on a Wednesday and are expected to be returned on the following Monday. We have loved seeing what the mascots have been up to with the children so far and have seen some amazing handwriting from the children that they have then read and shared with their classes.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN Year 3

Weeks 5 and 6, Term 4

Hello Year 3 families,

What a busy start to the term…. we have to firstly say how proud we were of all of the Year 3 students who attended Lord Somers Camp! They were absolutely amazing and the feedback we received from the camp staff was that the students at SPS were well mannered, enthusiastic and accepted all challenges asked of them with a growth mindset! We were so lucky with the weather and it was lovely to see many new friendships develop over the 3 days.

Learning Foci

Reading: We are continuing to learn about identifying persuasive techniques in texts and how this can impact the audience’s perceptions. This week we are reading and learning all about Tasmania and in Week 6 we are researching the Northern Territory. Identifying the natural landforms as well as famous man made features will continue to be a focus.

Spelling: Students are learning to make new words by building on a base. EG: ‘book’ bookcase, book shelf. They will learn about compound words, suffixes, prefixes and applicable spelling rules.

Writing: This week, we are writing persuasive postcards! Students will write a postcard, persuading someone that Somerville PS is the best school to attend. They will work through the writing process, with a specific focus on correct structure and word choice. Number and Algebra: In Numeracy, students are continuing to recognise, model and represent unit fractions including 1/2, 1/4, 1/3, 1/5 and their multiples to a complete whole.

Volume and Capacity: Over the next few weeks we are learning all about Volume and Capacity. Students are learning to measure, order and compare objects using familiar metric units of capacity.

REMINDERS
