Dear Parents and Carers,

It was wonderful to have a normal assembly together with the whole school in what seems a very long time. The weather was on point to have everyone together! Thank you to all community members who came, hopefully the weather continues to improve and the remaining assemblies this year are all together on the basketball courts. We have Healthy Harold visiting this week and next week. While there is no more ‘Life Ed Van’ that I am sure many parents remember from their own school days, the health education around looking after our bodies and eating healthy food continues, being delivered in classrooms with Harold the Giraffe!

The Years 3-6 students have been taking part in Bike Education as part of the Physical Education Program. Our students have demonstrated excellent bike knowledge and safety skills and some of the slow ride skills have proven to be challenging; however it is all about developing students confidence with riding in a wide range of situations. Thank you to all of the families who have helped by supporting their children to bring bikes to school for Bike Education.

ART Show

Over the last 3 years we have not been able to run our Art Show due to the COVID restrictions. Our 2023 Art Show will look different to previous years, this year’s show is an outstanding gallery walk in the hall. All our students have been creative and designed amazing pieces through a range of mediums. The opportunities the school Visual Art program provides for students is exceptional. Through the support and guidance of Mrs Bingham and Mrs Antoniou, all of our students have created a myriad of fabulous art. We hope to see everyone come to the Art Show this afternoon. It will be open from 3:15 till 6:30pm

What’s Happening – moving to Compass Newsfeed.

The feedback from families around Compass has been extremely positive. Year level teams will begin posting their ‘What’s Happening’ in the Compass Newsfeed rather than  being published in the Newsletter.

Parent Payments

This week Parent Contributions letters have been sent out via Compass. If you have any questions or would like to talk to someone about the parent contributions, please contact the office.

Whole school evacuation practice

Next week our students will participate in a whole school evacuation practice. This is practice is part of the Department of Education requirements to ensure all members of the school community know what to do if we need to be evacuated off site. Hopefully this never eventuates, however it is important that we practice. All students will be informed that this is just a practice.

Student Placement – 2024 Classes

The creation of 2024 classes and the placement of our students is a complex process requiring many factors to be taken into consideration. As student dynamics change over time, any previous requests are not factored in, only current information provided by this form are considered for 2024 classes.  Parent information is one part of the process, along with the carefully considered information that teachers gather through their daily work with their students, including their detailed knowledge of their students as learners as well as the way they work and interact with others. Parents are requested to only provide information that may assist their child’s learning and educational needs. Requests for individual teachers will not be considered.  If you have any educational requests related to your child’s class placement in 2024, please complete a form and return to us by Friday 10th November, 2023.

Parents wishing to provide confidential information to assist us in the process of student placement should download a ‘Class Placement of Pupils’ form, available below.

We encourage you to read through our newsletter to keep up to date with the current news and happenings at our school. The newsletter is an important communication tool to keep up to date with the current school events. In taking on parent feedback, next year we will be switching to monthly newsletters as more information and communication occurs through Compass.

Monday the 6th of November is a normal school day at Somerville Primary School. While some schools have Curriculum Days planned, we do not. We look forward to seeing everyone’s smiling faces on Monday!
