Day of Democracy

Year 6 - Day of Democracy Project

The day of democracy started with a flash as local member of parliament Kate Thwaites appeared at our school. We all gathered eagerly around her and started asking questions, here is some of the things we were curious about:

  • What made you want to be a politician?
  • Do you still sit in the House of Representatives if you are not part of the government?
  • Do you have to live in Jagajaga to be the federal member?
  • How often do you have to go to Canberra?
  • How many speeches have you done? Do you ever get nervous?
  • Who inspires you?
  • Can you think of a time when a member of the public has asked you for something and it was approved by the government?
  • What do you love most about your job?
  • Have you ever been in ‘trouble’ while sitting in the House of Representatives?
  • Do you want to be the Prime Minister?
  • What type of minister would you like to be?

After we had finished engaging with her, we all excitedly lined up for a well-deserved autograph! (of course) Some students were excited to show Kate their democracy projects, that we had all worked very hard on for several weeks.

Our task for this project was to identify an area of democracy that sparked our interests and become an expert. We researched our topics and soaked up the information, delving deeper into areas we were curious about. What people learned about at our democracy show down was anything from Women’s Rights, the voting process, where your taxes go and everything in between.

When presenting these master pieces, we felt rushes of joy and our confidence was blossoming as we shared our learning with the Ivanhoe school community! Through this experience we have learned how history has shaped how we live today and so much more about how Australia runs.

This knowledge will transfer into shaping the way we move through our years at high school and beyond. This experience overall has been such a blast, researching, collaborating, presenting and working hard. Seeing the members of the school especially the younger ones, come up to us eagerly and ready to learn made everyone smile knowing that our hard work had paid off.

What an experience!

A highlight of the Year 6 curriculum is the learning the students do around democracy.

Ivanhoe Primary School supports and promotes the principles and practice of Australian Democracy:

  • Elected government
  • The rule of law
  • Equal rights for all before the law
  • Freedom of speech and association
  • The values of openness and tolerance

Our aim is to support learners in becoming curious, reflective and critical in their thinking as global citizens.
