“Virtues are like vitamins, they help you grow, push you forward. Vices are essentially parasitic,” making the person weaker, pulling them “just a little bit” lower each day like doing the limbo, until they hit the ground”

Pope Francis

Hi MCC Community,

Welcome back to our final term of the College calendar. This term promises to be an exciting yet busy term. Firstly, my prayers go out to our Year 12 students who are currently sitting their HSC exams. May the grace of our Lord guide you and give you strength, courage and wisdom during this time.

In my Studies in Catholic Thought class, we have started to look at the topic of Virtue, Vice and Salvation. I came across quite an interesting article that I would like to share with you. The article spoke how we as people of faith can defend ourselves from the Seven Deadly Sins. It explained that all other sins stem from or are manifestations of the Seven Deadly Sins. The article further illustrated that each sin demonstrates the lack of a specific virtue, which in turn can be combated by strengthening oneself in that opposing virtue.

It’s important that as we continue our daily lives that we work towards serving the common good of society through that demonstration of love that Christ taught us. Pope Saint John Paul II wrote: “What really matters in life is that we are loved by Christ and that we love Him in return. In comparison to the love of Jesus, everything else is secondary. And, without the love of Jesus, everything is useless.”

Without accepting God’s invitation to have a deep and loving relationship with Him, nothing else that you do will make much sense. First and foremost, you are loved, chosen, and called into communion with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. All that you become depends upon your willingness to accept God’s grace, to enter into a love relationship with Him, and to be transformed into a more faith filled, knowledgeable, cherished, intimate, and loving member of the body of Christ, the Church.

The article concluded by challenging us as a society to bring to life the great commandment that Jesus gave his disciples “Love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another” (John 13:34). I would like to share this challenge with you all, how can you demonstrate the concept of love to all within our community.

ALPHA at MCC

Over the next few weeks, we will be running a Faith Formation series titled Alpha. Alpha is a series of interactive sessions that create a safe and honest space, online or in person, where people can explore life, faith and meaning. Alpha is an environment for anyone and everyone who wants to explore life and the Christian faith, ask questions, and share their point of view. Our hope is that Alpha can begin to build the bridge between the unknown and knowledge of faith. More information will be released about Alpha next week, please keep a lookout on Compass.

Yours in Faith,

Mr Abdala
