ZONES OF REGULATION

Zones of Regulation teaches students how to acknowledge, understand and regulate their emotions and use a tool kit to help them move throughout the different Zones. There are four Zones, Green, Yellow, Blue and Red. Self-regulation is an essential skill in life, and in all learning environments.

Beaumaris Primary School is beginning to introduce Zones of Regulation throughout the school. Several year levels this year, have been developing their skills and understanding about the different zones and developing a tool kit to support them when regulating behaviour. In 2024 we will have a whole school focus on Zones of Regulation and will develop the rich language that describes how we are feeling so students can articulate their moods, and feelings and be able to use strategies to support them to change or stay in the Zone they are in. Throughout 2024 this language and these strategies will be emersed in the home so you too can help your child regulate their feelings in any situation.

Students will learn the vocabulary, skills in reading other people’s facial expressions, gain perspective about how others see and react to their behaviour, insight into events that trigger their behaviour, calming and alerting strategies, and problem solving skills.

There are four different Zones; Blue (Slow) Zone- when your body is running slowly, such as when you are tired, sick, sad or bored. Green (Go) Zone- when you are ready to learn and “good to go.” You feel happy, calm and focused. Yellow (Caution) Zone- when you feel your engine beginning to run high, such as when you are frustrated, overwhelmed, silly, wiggly, excited, worried, anxious, or surprised. Red (Stop) Zone- is when you have “flipped your lid” and there is a loss of emotional self control. You have extreme feelings such as terror, uncontrolled anger, aggression, or elation.

Recognising these emotions in oneself is the first step, then in others and finally to understand how your emotions and attention to learning are connected.

We all move through the Zones throughout the day and its important our students learn strategies to move from one zone to the other.  Developing their own personal tool kit on how they can achieve this is part of the program.

It has been wonderful to observe students articulating how they are feeling and what strategies they have in their tool kit that will help them move zones.

We will share resources and more details early in 2024. Stay tuned!
