VET Pathways & WPL

VET Pathways & Workplace Learning News

This year we have had over eighty Year 11 and 12 VET students gain competency in either Cert II, III or Cert IV. This means that the students will have an additional qualification when entering the workforce as well as being able to enrol in further education.

Both SM & NM TAFE have sent out offers, there were only ten students who were offered a position with seven on the waitlist given they had a record of 4500 Western Australian students applying for TAFE this year. Feedback received from TAFE was that students who had work experience in the industry as well as excellent grades were the main contributing factors to being accepted into TAFE.

Next year we have students completing additional qualifications in areas of Electrical, Carpentry, Automotive, Nursing, Education Support, Civil Construction/Resource and Infrastructure Work Preparation, Animal Studies, Autonomous Workplace operations, Marine Biology, Business with an outside provider as well as having the opportunity to complete Engineering and Furnishings with our own qualified D&T teachers.

I would also like to congratulate all the Year 12 students who gain employment whether as a casual employee or ongoing in Apprenticeship in 2024. Many of these students went through an intensive period of writing resumes/application letters, creating portfolios, phone, video and group interviews as well as medical screenings. We are super proud of your efforts and wish you all the best for your bright future.

If any past or current students require assistance in this process please feel free to send me an email.

WORKPLACE LEARNING

As we enter the last four weeks of term, we have Year 11 General students attending Workplace Learning as well as the Year 10 Industry & Enterprise students. Thank you to the students who have returned their forms, for those that haven't been returned, please return them to me ASAP. WPL is an excellent opportunity for students to explore a range of industries allowing them to discover their passion or find another pathway.

I&E EXCURSIONS

The I&E students were fortunate to visit Roy Hill’s ROC-Ed Centre last week which provided an insight into the mining industry. Students were involved in a range of activities which allowed them to explore how their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) studies relate to real-world applications in mining. It was amazing to see the future of mining.

We also spent a morning at City of Kalamunda ‘Teddy Bears’ Picnic. The students came up with four activities which engaged children from 1-3 years of age. Despite the heat the boys were amazing, interacting with the children as well as the community members. We are super proud of the way they conducted themselves. We look forward to attending the ‘Intergenerational’ picnic on 13 November.

Tips For Getting An Apprenticeship

Steve Motion from Barminco recommends:

  • Get a manual driver’s licence if you want to work in mining.
  • If you want to work in a building trade you will need to travel from site to site. Get a driver’s licence.
  • Have an appropriate email address. Don’t put your school email address if you are about to leave school.
  • If you change your phone number, let the potential employer know by email and by ringing them.
  • Dress neatly for interviews in clothes appropriate for the job.
  • It’s ok to be nervous.
  • Research the business you want to work for. If you want them to be interested in employing you, you need to show you are interested in working for them.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask for feedback. This will help you in your next application and if another job comes up with this employer. Asking for feedback is hard but it will help them to remember you and they will know you are keen.
